Inter County Rankings

GAAinfo has created the first ever ranking system for inter-county hurling and football teams. It draws on over 4,500 results over the last 17 years - including the complete results of the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championships from 1991 until the present. The system has been retrospectively calculated from to 1991 to 2007 - allowing us to compare the current champions with the best teams from the past.

The system is based on the Elo ranking system which is used by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) to rank the best chess players. The system has been adapted to rank national teams in soccer and teams in Ice Hockey, American Football and Basketball. The official FIFA rankings for Women's soccer uses the Elo system. More information about the Elo ranking system can be found on Wikipedia.

We shouldnt be saying things like "our pedigree" and such. The fact is that teams like Cavan and YES Roscommon though connacht champions are not the teams of old and are a long way from competing with the top teams. I do believe Roscommon have the potential and have one of the best run underage structures in the country whereas Cavan are going nowhere fast!

john - results are drawn from the last 17 years. in which case mayo and galway would be light years ahead of sligo.

yew tree, regardless of these rankings and whatever system they are based on, every1 knows proper rankings such as golf and soccer should be based on current performance and not what happened 17 years ago. on current performance sligo are LIGHT YEARS ahead of mayo

If this is based on achievements over the last 17 years then Cork should be nowhere near top spot in football.. Kerry by a mile..
