You seem to be mistaking pride in a wonderful and unique game as snobbery....

Breff also no disrespect to the lads on the video their doing well but their skills wouldn't get them on a junior B team as it is... some of the basics are missing some of them were holding the hurley wrong, a lot were scoop the ball hockey style rather and a clean pull on the ground and one of the hardest skills in hurling was absent which is a solid strike of a ball on the run how many of them could hit on both sides too..... there a big difference between playing the game and playing it well but it's brilliant to see these lads embracing the game hopefully it'll start a tradition of hurling there.

You don't have to be good at hurling to enjoy it, but that can be said of a lot of sports.

You're from Cavan therefore I believe you are unqualified to speak on anything hurling related.

I'm not even sure if I'm allowed!!

I still have the all-star game from 1991 (maybe have been played in 1992) on video somewhere think it was played in the astrodome in the states....pity they couldn't do things like that more often.

Second thoughts I don't think it was the astrodome but it was some stadium which was fully covered.

Right lads, I'm going drop a bomb (pun not intended) on this thread.

Hurling snobs always aggresively insist the the skill levels of hurling are so high it is impossible to simply take it up at a later age while any fool could play county football.

How come these army lads could?

Thanks for proving that hurling snobs were right.

And do not expect to see these "army lads" beating Antrim anytime soon, let alone Kilkenny.

No I'm not Hag. I'm proud of the wonderful and unique game of hurling but not proud enough to constantly criticise football like so many hurling snobs do. Its nothing personal hag and I dont consider you a hurling snob.

what ban was that Patrique?

The one that a Superintendent from the West Midland Police (Birmingham 6 anyone?) voted against doing away with. Of course under its strict interpretation he should not have been a member, but sure what is another bit of hypocrisy matter after years of it.

Andy SPORTS association that has to ban people.....something the matter with that association. Look at Rangers, Linfield and the GAA for examples. The other two saw the light before the GAA.

What has this to do with the USA army?

Note that in 2011 the British Army in its entirety is more or less a division of the USA army.

That ban.

The stupid one.

The one that allowed idiots to attack us for years.

Rule 21.

Being as how Patrique seems to be otherwise engaged, can anyone shed some light on this apparent GAA ban on US military personnel playing Gaelic Games ?

Well being from Cavan, I dont know much about how good the soldiers skill levels are but two posters on this thread from Tipperary seem to think they are very good, but now that I've raised questions everyone is playing down their skill levels????

Hey Hag, it was the Toronto Skydome in 1990, Tipp v the All-Stars, I remember watching it on TV. Yeah, it would be cool to see something like that again, not sure if it'd be viable at the moment though. I'd like to see an All-Star game played somewhere other than the usual spots in the US(i.e. Boston or New York.) though. Places like Milwaukee might be an idea, it has the largest hurling club in the US I believe, an All Star trip might help raise the games profile in the city. And I think playing a game in a US University where hurling is being played would be smart. If a sport takes off in the Universities over there its big news. I really think, if its given the right encouragement, hurling could be the next big thing over there.

just shows that any old fool can run around doing the egg and spoon race that is hurling- this crap you hear about it taking years is complete nonsense- you could take it up in a few months without a doubt and play with lads on a club team and noone would know any difference

I've watched alot of videos of Americans playing the game, and these guys seem to be at the upper end of the scale. I mean, all the lads taking up the game over there are doing a great job. I watched the clips of Stanford V Berkley from last year, and they really seemed to have improved in skill level from the previous years game, very encouraging. Similarly, Milwaukee have their indoor training sessions on the web, all Americans playing it looks like, and they're making strides. Same goes for lads in Indianapolis and St. louis. But the speed and control of the Army lads in New Hampshire surprised me on that video. The speed at which they could pick up and run with the ball, was a step ahead of what I'd have expected for lads outside of Ireland. Some of the guys had awkard swings, which you'd expect, but some of them had a pure natural swing. I mean, its always hard to tell from a video like that, but overall I was impressed. I don't know if the lad training them is affiliated with the North American GAA in any way, but I'd say he'd be a good man to get older lads to start playing the game.

Patrique,

I have never heard of any rule banning US soldiers.

The ban was stupid you say. Saying as that army caused trauma in Ireland for 100s of years I'd insist that it was very important given that the GAA was establised in defiance of British tyranny.

At the time I was opposed to the lifting of the ban, however in the spirit of change and with hindsight I now think it was an essential part of foward movement and thinking.

And to think that the British army is controlled by USA is nieve. Britian is a crafy war machine which has always proved to be very cunning and difficult to overcome. But thats besides the point!

Tyranny.

Roman, Egyptian, Alexander the Great, what has any of that to do with a SPORTS association?

Would have had to ban a lot of people.

And I think rangers banned Catholics because of the Tyranny of the Spanish inquisition.

So that was OK then?
