Fair dues to them, they look like they have put in a great effort to get to a good level of skill. I wish we could grow the game better at home. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 04/01/2011 21:24:50 839881 Link 0 |
They'll probably drill holes in the hurls and shoot defenceless Iraqi and Afghan citizens, they are good at that sort of thing. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9825 - 04/01/2011 21:34:30 839891 Link 0 |
I'm sorry Ulsterman, since you are not from Iraq or Afghanistan you are not allowed comment on these matters. After all, as you explained a while ago, this is the reason we were all told we are not allowed to give any opinions on the North. doublehop (Kildare) - Posts: 4172 - 05/01/2011 11:06:37 839964 Link 0 |
Watched that program last night, impressive stuff. I've seen alot of videos of hurling in the US on the net (hurling in the Universities, Milwaukee hurling, Indianapolis hurling etc), and its great to see. What surprised me with these lads in New Hampshire was the skill level, I couldn't get over how good they were. And these are lads that took up the game late in life, makes the speed and ball control they seem to have already all the more impressive. The Barley House Wolves website says that program, Recon, has a potential audience of 30 million. Even if the viewing figures are a fraction of that, that's still huge exposure for hurling. There might be military potential for dried out Sliothars as cluster bombs. jarhead (Westmeath) - Posts: 285 - 05/01/2011 14:00:19 840107 Link 0 |
Very impressed by those American soldiers. I often hear similar stories of people getting a glimpse of hurling and becoming fans - seems to happen more with hurling than other sports LeVolant (Wexford) - Posts: 2 - 07/01/2011 14:51:03 841435 Link 0 |
Right lads, I'm going drop a bomb (pun not intended) on this thread. Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12452 - 07/01/2011 15:01:27 841453 Link 0 |
We have an army barracks in Cavan with lads from all over the country but none playing hurling. If the Yanks can do it........ breffni666 (Cavan) - Posts: 294 - 07/01/2011 15:12:59 841462 Link 0 |
PS, I shouldn't have to do this but I get enough grief about this: Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12452 - 07/01/2011 15:13:03 841463 Link 0 |
I think the majority of hurling people would love the game to be played as widely as possible, and the issue of not being able to start playing the game at a later age is a fear rather than an inclination. These guys in NH have the edge in that they have a military background, so would be able to take and carry out instruction better than the average guy. The swing is difficult to get right the older the person gets, but I personally think a new way of training can be developed for people starting later. The amount of local American news programs that have featured hurling being taken up by locals is extraordinary, I'm surprised its not being noticed more over here. The most striking feature though, is the growth of hurling in the US universities, Stanford, Berkley, Purdue, Indianapolis etc. I think there could be a chance that hurling could become the next American sport, over time. I'd like to see future hurling All-Star trips maybe address this. Perhaps play an All-Star game in one of the Universities that have started playing hurling?
