Oh get over yourself Ulsterman, it is top class entertainment and even better if you go to the real thing. You sound like one of these dyed in the wool gaa heads who constantly spend their time slagging off other sports and try to convince everybody else of the error of their ways in even attempting to follow other sports. gilly0512 (Galway) - Posts: 1176 - 03/01/2011 21:48:30 839432 Link 0 |
Lewis 6 - 3 up and cruising hitting 180s for fun but its his nature that when the finishing line is in sight he tightens up this should have been over but Anderson's holding his nerve might turn this around yet fortyfive (Tyrone) - Posts: 5929 - 03/01/2011 21:52:01 839435 Link 0 |

Control yersel' gilly. Darts LISTEN darts is NOT a sport. It is, like bowls, snooker, backgammon and cards, a hobby and pastime. Some people earn a few quid at them and good luck to them but darts is played and watched by a boozy, chavvy, sweaty, mostly chubby red faced crowd who are mostly very drunk and very loud. I am sure the smell at the place is lovely........NOT. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9818 - 03/01/2011 21:55:45 839440 Link 0 |

Prince Harry i think. Andrew Flintoff summed it up when he commentated on the Jenkins- Cullen match he said that any game where you have to put in so much practise and dedication, play in front of big crowds and be under the pressure that the players are under, how dare people not call it a sport. i totally agree. Snooker is asports two, so is bowls, on what basis would people say that these are not sports? 890202 (Wexford) - Posts: 1278 - 04/01/2011 14:18:15 839568 Link 0 |
Talking about what is or is not a sport, they are talking about introducing Chess into the Olympics !! Put that in your pipes and smoke it !! Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 04/01/2011 16:47:26 839686 Link 0 |
excellent final with 2 great professionals. anyone who says darts is not a sport is wrong. the players are pros who practice every day and earn alot of money so i doubt they care what some people say. the premier league starts in feb and will have average crowds of 15000 people. the sport has come a long way from the pints on stage days of 20 years ago. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11596 - 04/01/2011 19:52:21 839806 Link 0 |
Great performance from Adie Lewis, he seems to have settled down a bit in the last 6 months. Havent got Sky, so was watching the BDO match. Was a cracker between Walton and Adams, but there has been some pony as well. Tongo (UK) - Posts: 1795 - 04/01/2011 20:15:42 839818 Link 0 |
On a separate note, commendation to BBC's David Croft who has mentioned the PDC a few times and congratulated Adie Lewis earlier. This certainly hasn't always been the case with the Beeb commentary in past years. Interestingly, he and Martin Adams have commentated together a couple of times and both times Croft has mentioned the PDC Adams has remained completely silent. His silence said it all. Adams is a great player but his staunch, entrenched views and his willingness to stay in the small pool rather than take on the top PDC stars is starting to become pathetic. And he is incredibly smug. Someone mentioned earlier on this thread that Taylor is smug, but Adams is way more smug than Taylor. Tongo (UK) - Posts: 1795 - 04/01/2011 20:19:57 839823 Link 0 |
Phil Taylor and Mervyn King publically slated the boozy skangers who ruined the darts this year and Barry Hearn today stated that they did indeed have a big problem with drunken buffoons at Alexandra Palace. I rest my case. Sport?? HA HA HA! LOL! Remember the Not The Nine O'Clock news sketch about darts with Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones sinking all the booze, "....and he needs a double whiskey to win". HA HA HA, that's darts, played and watched by big flabby boozers. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9818 - 04/01/2011 21:19:57 839872 Link 0 |
Obviously you didn't see the BDO match between Stuart Kellett and Jan Dekker last night then Ulsterman. Two players, aged 29 and 20 respectively, both as skinny as rakes. And there have been a few others this week as well. You need to do some more research. Tongo (UK) - Posts: 1795 - 05/01/2011 08:50:34 839918 Link 0 |

Ulsterman it was the crowd that Phil Taylor and Mervin King slated not their fellow players for being drunk. Im sure darts is not the only sport where the audience consumes alcohol. Maybe some of the players do aswell but does this stop it being a sport? I don't think so. Is hurling not a sport then if somebody plays a junior b match with a few drinks in them? 77981301 (UK) - Posts: 79 - 05/01/2011 15:03:13 840155 Link 0 |
Ulsterman I would hazard a guess that out of a crowd of 70,000 in Croke Park that at least half of them if not more would have consumed at least four pints or more by the time they make it to Croker. These same people would have at least another two during the various intervals, and this would probably be a a lot more were you allowed to bring alcohol to your seat. The fact of the matter is that it does not matter what 'sports' event you are attending, if you allow alcohol to be sold throughout the event, you will get a large proportion of boozed up people, as somebody else has already pointed out, stick the crowd from Parkhead or Hill 16 in the Ally Pally and you will have the exact same result. As for darts not being a sport, a definition of sport is 'an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means'. Darts may not be skillful to you mate, but these lads train as hard if not harder than most other sports people out there, and deserve everything they get. gilly0512 (Galway) - Posts: 1176 - 05/01/2011 15:50:56 840199 Link 0 |
