Its just ridiculous that we're still in this situation. Let us all get on to our clubs so the peoples wishes are enforced.

Sure, everyone knows what the rules are. But surely the GAA have bigger issues to be dealing with than what is now an antiquated rule. Finance, both county and club, and emigration are two issues that are of more importance.

830239 rugby/soccer pitches, athletics tracks, indoor sports halls (which are not designed for gaelic games)

You will find that most if not all of these facilities are provided by local government (ie) the taxpayer. The fact that they built indoor sports halls that cannot accommodate Gaelic games tells it's own story.

You'd certainly need plenty of ceiling height for one of them....

Yes you are quite right jimbodub and there are several examples around the country such as the one at Lavey Erins Own.

First post on this, I cant believe the GAA are pursuing this. This will only antagonise people against the GAA and show them that they are indeed living in the 1950's like many suggest. If The Harriers can get a few bob for letting a soccer/rugby club use their facilities, does anybody really care.

Given that several GAA clubs are in such serious debt (albeit I dont think the Harriers are one of them) I think if clubs are innovative in money raising, why should they be punished for doing so?

Tom1916, I'd bet that most of the new facilities being developed by GAA clubs are part funded by National Lottery grants (TAXPAYERS MONEY), I know our's was. This is narrow mindness on the part of the GAA. We trained in an Indoor sand based horse arena when our pitch was being developed and we didn't get charged either for the use of it. Running a club nowadays is a buisness when you look at the balance sheets (It cost 170K to run our club for the past year) so if a club has the facilities it should be able to rent to any organisation to make an income.

Leaving the rules aside, could someone tell me what possible harm is there in letting other sports being played on a GAA pitch? Why on earth would it be banned?

Double standards they open up croke park to other sports for money but will not allow clubs to do it .

I wonder would they allow hurling to be played in the aviva stadium, oh that's right i forgot they purposely built it so it couldn't facilitate gaelic games.

Ok Tom, can you give us all a coherent reason why a GAA club, in your opinion, should not be allowed to make some money by renting their facilities out to other sports? Considering that this money will go back into buying footballs, helmets, sliotars etc.

Also bear in mind that GAA clubs all over the country use other sports facilites.

Our club has a brand new Astro turf pitch and they rent it out by the hour
so as the club has some income nothing wrong with that. Makes sense to me.

Why all the stupid arguments? Its very simple, a rule is in place to prevent this happening. Albeit a rule that is probably as old as the association when times were very different. But the president has made it clear that if a motion is put to congress he has no problem with it. So if everyone on here has such a problem, just lobby your club and get them to put the motion forward. Easy

why should the GAA provide facilities for other clubs. The GAA is neither the government or a charity.

I agree.

I say "NEVER, NEVER, NEVER" "ULSTER SAYS NO"

That sounds slightly familiar but I can't remember where from.

AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I fell for it hook, line and sinker.

After two years of thinking Tom (Paisley) 1916 was simply neanderthal I now discover he has been winding us all up.

That one about purpose built halls, nothing to do with the weather in Ireland or anything else, simply built for the sole purpose not to have GAA in them, that is BRILLIANT. Real dry, tongue in cheek humour.

Worthy of the Daily Mash, the best satire site on the web.

Fair play Tom, ye had me fooled.

Tom1916: i'm English by the way, so your 'quisling' accusation is very much incorrect. I'm sure you'll take an instant dislike now, but that's your problem not mine.
