Still an amazing vote. On the back of this and their stance on the IMF I would expect next opinion poll to show Shinners on up to 15%. If they got that in a general election they could win 12/13/14 seats.

Not surprised at the result but Thought O domniall would have been closer given that this was a 2 FF from three last time
Total Collapse of the FF vote
Doherty has polled 40% versus 21% in 2007 - huge gain for the shinners
In any case Doherty was always going to get in for the General election anyway - O domnaill would not have a hope of taking a second seat next time round
If anything Coughlan will struggle to take the third seat behind Doherty and McGinley
Brutal result for FG 21% of the vote after polling 23% in 2007

Protest vote or a genuine challenge to the status quo?

Its worth remembering that bi-elections are notorously fickle and you will find that come general election time most electors will return their normal voting patterns or if really ****** with the situation, refrain from voting at all!

In all fairness who could vote for that particular Fine Gael candidate ? Did anyone see his performances on t.v. ? If thats the best Fine Gael could come up with then its no wonder their vote collapsed !!

Pearse Doherty is a very good politician, but the whole election means Jack!! There was no competition, not Pearses fault by the way. Sinn Fein is popular because the government is a joke. I have no doubt in 10 years time it'll be the same old FF/FG ding dong with the rest way behind!

Sinn Fein went to court to get this by election held so it was pretty obvious they would win the vote and isn't Donegal ment to be one of Fianna Fails "strongholds"

SF were expecting to win, but make no mistake about it, this is a landslide !

As previously pointed out, it has been a disaster for FG, the people of Donegal are obviously aware that putting aside the civil war rhetoric, there is very little economic or social differences between FF and FG. FF will be relatively happy in that they were not completely obliterated & labour will be disappointed.

A good day for Donegal and the country.

P.S. Well done to Pearse and his electoral staff.

Didnt see the interview in questioon but it reminds me of Graham Geraghty on the tv when he went for election and he kept doing that finger pyramid of evil contemplation, he was badly advised there!!

What's with you Pomeroy? Since when did you want Sinn Feiners to get elected? Have they gotten to you too?

This is huge setback for Labour and FG as well as FF. They have both hummed and hawed over the IMF and the cuts and Shinners are clearly seen as the only party that has come out strongly against it and presented a costed and coherent economic alternative.

This could be landmark election that transforms Shinners from marginal party to one capable of returning TDs in double figures. If they come back with 10+ (and I think it could be as high as 14/15) and they are the left opposition then you could see them growing even more over the next few years.
