Disgrace.

They were more concerned about getting themselves re-elected.... they honestly believe that they brought us this far... they think the Irish people are idiots.

Dont listen to those feckers... The Greens should hang their heads in shame

You'd swear that the IMF were not currently in this country... they completely ignored the issue!!!!!!

I cant believe what I've just watched..... astonishing!

You could perhaps get seriously ill and be forced into our hospital system and you can have great fun surrounded by your cut backs.

I have private medial insurance why would i go to a public hospital and into a ward or something as horrific as A&E - no thanks!! Folks these decision have to be taken at a macro level if people start listening to little mary and little jonny - everyone goes bust. And before you listen to the socialist nonsense that is will arrive out of liberty hall- remeber this is the soft option i.e. our choice, and its our very last chance, imagine someone not as accomodating as our government saying from a computer in frankfurt- 'Irelands minimum wage is to be €4'- remember folks this is the easy option- ye can cut the branch your sitting on it makes no odds to me - juts look at greece have the protests achieved anything except made the debt worse and folks its your debt noone elses. You should be delighted with what has happened it really is a 'diet' budget from which noone will suffer. I just really hope they take the next step and impose vat on union membership- that would be the cherry on top for me :)

VAT would imply that there's some value in union membership. I fail to see the value in contributing a few quid every week to pay for Jack O'Connor's €150k+ salary. Thank **** the rest of us taxpayers aren't subsidising it anymore

Seems to be based on a very optimistic set of assumptions - Even the "worst case" that they have included still forecasts economic growth - No mention of the banks and no estimate on the interest rate on the bail out - All in all 104 pages with the big bits missing

€15bn budgetary correction over 4 years, broken down into €10bn in PS cuts and and €5bn in higher taxes. The base case sees the deficit being reduced to 9% of GDP in 2011 before reaching 3% in 2014. Debt is seen peaking at 102% in 2013 before falling to 2014

To reach a a deficit to GDP level of 3% by 2014 is dependant on average growth rate of 3.7% over the period to 2014 which given the cuts in disposable income looks a tad optimistic

In the "worst case Scenario which still shows growth averaging 2.9%,(interest rate in 2014 of 5.7%) debt will still be on an upward trend at 113% by 2014

Can't see anything in the numbers for the extra funds required for the banks and no details on cost of funds from the EU.

jim- you seem to miss the point- you dont go onto a trolly in a private hospital you are very well taken care of and rightly so, those of us who pay our way deserve the best of treatment, those who dont well they should get in line at the local general hospital.

on the minimum wage- if you drop social welfare the minimum wage might not push anyone onto welfare. social welfare is a farce at the moment, i despise every single one of them getting their tv licience for free- its a national disgrace, its welfare not luxury! 15 billion would be saved a year if we cut the social back to 100 a wek and cut all the extras like rent allowance, fuel etc to zero. Im sick of paying for lazy people- but as this budget suggestes today the tide is turning on the lazy in our society

liathroidboy - you are correct that if you pay you deserve private care - hpwever many hard working people who have paid their way all their life cant afford private healthcare - does this mean they dont deserve high quality healthcare? - of course not.

Incorrect If you go to A&E you wait your turn - If you need to be admitted then you will receive private or semi private care dependant on your level of cover
The vast majoirty of private hospitals do not provide an A&E service - They provide elective procedures - ie ones that are booked in advance

The main beenfit of health insurance is that you skip the queue to get a private consultant who will get the procedure booked in a short lead time - There is very little benefit for emergency care.

You can dependant on where you live go for a swiftcare clinic - You pay for that regardless of if you have private cover or not. Dependant on your health insurance cover you may qualify for a partial refund.

In reality if you are under 50 on the law of averages your best bet is to put the money away in a personal savings fund go private and negotiate the bill yourself -
Once you are over 50 on the law of averages health insurance is cheaper than your probability of annual average cost so at that stage buy insurance

No but were subsidising the fools that implemented this plan-and feel they don't have to cut their own wages because they've been cut enough already..DOH

My Views on today

I'm disappointed no political reform has been mentioned as yet. In terms of a message to the market and to the people reducing Dail numbers to about 120, to go in line with what most countries have political representatives to population would have been welcome, it may also filter out some of the tds who are inept on national issues(funeral attenders, pothole letters and court request letters) which I feel should be done by councillers not tds. One thing which is better in the Uk is the number of mps and the fact that they don't seem to be absorbed by local affairs.

In general social welfare cuts seem to be correct we need these to be at a level where there is an incentive to work. The cut in minimum wage is about 30c too much I agree with the principle though.
The main thing I hope for from this budget would be to create a chance for tourism , place the emphasis on surf, golf, large casino, fishing, new nature species . Do this through deflation, promotion of areas of interest, airport costs and taxes reduced. I'm convinced this is the area we have the infrastructure to get growth.

If you raise the minimum wage to say 10 Euro an hour you might make progress.

Look at Brazil.
