its the only sport I know of where the ref is constantly shouting at the players to obey the rules, wouldnt you think they would know them.

I'd certainly pertainly prefer that to the GAA refs who'll refuse to explain why they've given a free.

blackandwhite in gaa the ref doesnt have to tell the players why he is giving a free, they know why because they know the rules, and even then if you watch gaa you will see the ref signalling why he has blown for a free, you will see him him indicating if its too many steps,if its for slapping down with the hurley etc,the point I was making is that rugby is the only sport that I know of where the ref is constantly shouting at the players to obey the rules,if it happens in any other field game you might let us know

Mooncat,

The referee is required to indicate why he awarded a free, but certainly at club level they usually don't. I've seen players booked for then asking what the free was for.
And you obviously don't understand rugby if you think the referees' shouting is to tell players to obey the rules. At the breakdown players are allowed to contest with their hands until a ruck is formed. The referee shouts "hands away" or similar to inform the players when the ruck is formed, not to tell them to obey the rules. If they don't remove their hands at this point they are penalised.
Similarly, shouting get back if to inform them where the offside line is.

If GAA referees learned to communicate as well as rugby referees do then there probably would be a less lot abuse directed at referees in our games.

black&white to be honest I dont want to understand the rules of rugby,I do watch rugby on tv and I have listened to the analysists complaining of different referees interpeting the rules in different ways, the southern hemisphere refs have a different take on some of the rules than their northern compatriots,as you say I dont know the rules of rugby but I think the ref also shouts at players to stay onside when the ruck has formed, also wouldnt you think that professional players would know when a ruck has formed,as for players abusing refs after frees in GAA I have been to many matches this year, club and intercounty and watched many on the tv and I havent seen much abuse of refs. The origanal post was This is Rugby Country, some posters think because its watched by big numbers on tv that its the most popular game, and they talk about the attendances at HC games,if I could do a count of the attendances at all KK club matches from March to October it would be in the thousands, multiply that by 32 and add all the intercounty leauge and championshipsI can assure you rugby attendances wouldnt come near it

Give it up mooncat you are arguing over rules which you admit you don't understand !!!

But why do you watch so much rugby if you don't like it and even watch the analysis

badmonkey I am not arguing over rules,I was making the point that the ref contuinuosly shouts at the players to stay within the laws of the game and I asked does it happen in any other sport, where did I say I dont like rugby? I will make no bones about the fact that I am first and foremost a GAA man,to me hurling is the best game in the world, that doesnt mean I dont like other sports.

mooncat the ref shouts at players to tell them that if they continue what they are doing(if they are committing a foul) they will concede a penalty. it should happen in all sports as everyone will know that a penalty/free is being given and would mean there is no confusion with a refs decision like there is in a lot of sports

Fair enough mooncat I just assumed you didn't like rugby from your comments and I agree re the hurling. The ref calls ruck because those at the break down may not be in a position to see around them so ref calls the ruck so it is clear to all. The refs calling allows for a much more free flowing game , more enjoyable to play and watch

ormondbannerman let me see if I have this right,if a player is commiting a foul the ref shouts at him,if he doesnt stop then he concedes a penalty, shouldnt he penalised anyway,2 things, imagine 82,000 people in Croke Park and the fullback is fouling and the ref is shouting at him from 50yds away, can he keep fouling if he doesnt hear the ref,are you ballboy in another life.I give up,its the pub for me and a game of cards

Lots of rules suit that sport only and are not applicable to other sports. Would rugby work with hurleys? Course not they are different sports, doesn't mean hurling is a bad sport. the refs in rugby are fantastic, yes there are regional variations between northern and southern hemispheres but that happens in all sports - soccer English refs more lenient to physicality than continental refs. Even in a tiny place like Ireland refs in ulster ref differently to southern refs.

Personally I think it's better for the ref to be in constant communication with the players, it let's them know exactly what is expected of them. The respect shown to referee's in Rugby is so refreshing as well and in stark contrast to football where you see footballers f'ing and blinding at the officials. A sport for hooligans played by gentlemen
