Certainly is up around Mayo and the rest of Connacht. Massive crowds in the Colosseum in Galway every week.

your so right- connacht beating samoa a few week back really does show the standards of rugby considering they fielded a team of students! how is your beloved ulster fairing 'stand up for the ulster men' - a great sight at ravenhill. folks we all know that rugby is the biggest followed sport in this country, its a better organisation ran by better people the gaa should take note but alas its run by the irelands own brigade

Rugby is as dead as the Celtic Tiger
Couldn't even fill Aviva for a game against the All-blacks.

BMW X5s, Holiday homes in Marbella, A little weekend place down in Clifden, cappucino - Pannini frappe lattes - Pony Lessons for Blatheen, and a school ski trip for Christian - All part of the greed and nonsene that pervailed during the Celtic Tiger years

Everyone thought they were from Dalkey and pretended to "loike" rugby, Every village had its own "rugby crowd" Sun Dried Tomato sandwiches - bad manners to even look at your change after buying a pint and all the rest of the prententious nonsense.

Pretending to be knowledgable - "Good Scrimmager" - "He runs excellent lines" "Powerful at the break down"

Thank goodness all that nonsense is gone - Rugby will take its rightful place - something to watch on a cold saturday afternoon in front of the fire - if there isn't a good horse race on the other channel -

If this is Rugby Country - It ain't my country

Rugby is certainly getting very popular in Dublin, Leinsters average home attendance is 22,000 +.

Apart from the ticketing fiasco of the autumn series the rugby crowd are streets ahead of the GAA in terms of marketing their games.

Why the "nordies?"

Before you could buy success and Munster's main players were from New Zealand and South Africa and further afield, ULSTER dominated rugby in Ireland.

Even in the professional era the FIRST Irish winners in Europe.......ULSTER.

The only problem with the Ireland team at the minute is that there are too many southerners playing.

Excellent Omar! The only good thing about rugby is that I made a tidy sum backing against Ireland of late. As advised here I might also add regarding the handicap on the All Blacks game.

Great post Omar!

Used to sicken my **** lads at home talking about the game and using some of the exact same quotes you referred to. I have nothing against the sport at all, it's a good physical game sprinkled with odd moments of skill. I'm sometimes baffled at the praise awarded some players who have merely punted the ball downfield and out over the touchline however.

It's the whole pretentiousness of the thing that gets me. I know a lad from home who once came down for a 6 nations game in Croke Park. We went to the Big Tree for a few coolers before the game and we got chatting to a few goys from south of the river. The chat of the lad from home with them was nauseating. I very nearly decked him out in the beer garden.

Good enough sport, though more brute force than skill required in my own opinion.

To answer the original post whenever there's a rugby team in virtually every parish in Ireland like the GAA currently enjoys then I suppose we'll be 'rugby country' , until then we'll remain a country in love with GAA.

Great spectator sport, when played in the right spirit one of the best IMO. As for those of you who believe theres a link between the Celtic bubble and interest in Irelands rugby team, get a grip, unless of course the the so called boom ran for 90 odd years or so and, well we just didnt know it at the time!
