811711 I would never wear one. I'm not saying the guys who died, irish or otherwise, were not brave, I just feel like they didn't die for me or anything I believe in. By contrast, the easter lilly represents just that - what I believe in and a sacrifice for me

Most of the Irishmen who died in WWI died, in their eyes, for Ireland. They were there to guarentee Home Rule.

You might disagree with them going to fight with the British but their motives were for Ireland.

This debate rears it's head every year, some people wish to pay their respects to those brave men, others don't. I don't agree you should be forced to wear a poppy but at the same time I don't see why people should feel offended by that. However there are those on here who go out of their way to be offended so leave them to it

Am I? I've been busy today so haven't been on all that much, apologies if someone asked me a question which I missed. A single thread where people could put their questions to be would be a good idea, perhaps you can can get working on it Seanie

Now it do-sent matter a hoot if you want to wear a poppy or a lily the Great War and the Second World War was a shared sacrifice men from the Ulster Volunteers and the Irish Volunteers marched side by side to defeat Evil unlike the tripe that's put out today to justifier invading country's that have been bomb time and time again back to the dark ages, One good story to come out of the Island of Ireland was a joint cross community project head by two former foes Patrick (Paddy) Doherty vice-chairman of the Derry Citizens Defence Association and Glen Barr leader of Loyalist Association of Workers in the early 1970s both men came together to build the Thiepval tower to commemorate the Irish Dead of the Great War (84) A shared sacrifice f#6AEDD

PP: "I don't agree you should be forced to wear a poppy"

Thanks PP. That's great. Also, I don't think anyone should be forced to wear a yellow star. Ground breaking human rights work on HS this evening.

As for the old home rule argument. Fair enough, fair play to them. Also I'm sure many of them were fighting simply to put bread on the table, again fair play, it's fair enough. I still don't feel like wearing one. I have plenty of relatives who fought against the empire but none who fought for them. Also I think wearing a poppy represents the british empire's army - something i detest. The men who fought and died in WWI were brave etc but it was for absolutely nothing - not home rule, nothing. If the poppy represented remembering the dead with a view to avoiding future wars then I'd wear one. If the poppy represented the shame of colonialism and all who died because of it then I'd wear one. If the british were not entrenched in another illegal and immoral war then I'd be more inclined to wear one. None of these things are true so any irishman wearing one is his own business but I'd rather eat my hat than pin one on.

As for those same ancestors of mine i mentioned above. The words spin and grave come to mind if they saw me wearing a poppy.

Wnderful post.

If someone wants to wear a poppy, wear it. If they don't, do not wear one.

Why must everything from the War of the SPANISH succession to poppies involve politics in Ireland. Are we still so incredible stupid that we can be used by one and all for any cause/

Palestinian and Israeli flags in Belfast anyone?

Catch yerselves on.

You're not confident or comfortable enough in your Irishness to say sod what people think, I want to honour Ireland's dead. Be comfortable with who you are friend

Two things Pomeroy
First I am very comfortable in who I am. Comfortable enough to know that the red Poppy is not for me. Am very comfortable wearing my White Poppy though.
Second If you wish to be my friend we should meet and get to know each other. When will you be training at the Club next I will come around. I will make it easy for you to recognise me.I will wear my Derry top and cap.

And just to finish I would say that yes Jon Snow may well be correct regarding his comments regarding Poppy Fascism. We are not aware of what pressure he is being put under because of his decision not to wear one and his comments were in response to that. And Patrique would you catch yourself on this is a very legitimate and open debate. I have not seen anyone make demands that the poppy should not be worn in all the posts. I have seen most posters offer explanations as to why they will not, they do have the right to pin on their own lapels whatever they wish.

Is that an adhesive (glue) easter Lily or one with a pin?

Just thought we could argue about something else that was/is trivial.

I wonder will some of 'poster's be on HS this Sunday or will they be marching with their regiments. Some of these people have no connection with the GAA whatsoever and most likely will be with their colleagues at the weekend. Smiley's people are everywhere.

:-) Like that finglas. The idea that wearing a poppy is commemorating 'all Irish people killed in conflict' is Orwellian bull. Oh, and I am ****** if am going to wear or to be happy to see another Irish person wearing a symbol of the army that burned my grannies house, condemned her brother to death (but were too stupid to find him in an internmnet camp :-) and killed their friends. And yet these people hound Nadine Coyle from Derry, a city where the Paras murdered 13 people on a peaceful march, because she let hers 'fall off.' Fascists is right.

I really didn't realise so many people has this inferiority complex. People from the North like Ulsterman I can understand in a way but the lads down South genuinely surprise me. Independence for nearly a 100 years and yet they still have to prove they're in no way British. Get over it, it's embarrassing
