Well done to the Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow who has condemned what he called 'Poppy Fascism' in Britain. He said he was sick of the right wing media, armchair generals and Little Englanders who insist that everyone MUST wear a poppy at all times weeks before Remembrance Sunday. The poppy has of course been politicised in the North by Unionist bigots and Loyalist paramilitary elements who mostly wear the poppy as an antagonistic provocative symbol. There seems to be a contest every year within Unionism to see who can wear the biggest poppy at the earliest time. There is nothing wrong with commemmorating the War dead but when people abuse this then that takes away the original meaning. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9825 - 07/11/2010 13:37:10 811182 Link 0 |

If people want to wear a poppy let them. Theys should be free to do so, but nobody should be forced to wear one or looked down on for choosing not to. Dr.Shephard (Leitrim) - Posts: 2187 - 07/11/2010 18:24:41 811381 Link 0 |
It's a tricky one. What Britain did in World War 1 and World War 2 was brave and it's worth commemorating the men and women, many of them Irish, who gave their lives in those wars. However I think most people would find it hard to show any sympathy for a colonial force with a terrible record in many parts of the world including this island, that even today are involved in wars in the middle east which they failed to fully justify. roundball (Tipperary) - Posts: 2514 - 07/11/2010 18:26:10 811384 Link 0 |

The poppy is undoubtedly seen as a british remembrance symbol.I have no problem with anybody wearing it for that reason. We would do well to remember that there are many Irish men in the catalogues of the british war dead and therefore it commemorates their sacrifice also.Granted it probably is used by the unionist/loyalist community as an advertisement of their britishness, and similarly republicans wear the Easter Lily to commemorate our dead and our sense of Irish Republicanism. We will reach a day when its not seen as being contentious to wear such symbols.Alex Maskey of Sinn Fein laid a wreath in memory of British war dead a few years back in a huge gesture of inclusiveness and respect for those of the pro-british tradition, and of course for the many Irish men who died also. seanie_boy (Tyrone) - Posts: 4235 - 07/11/2010 21:24:57 811611 Link 0 |

Fairly simple question. I presume because you are against wearing one you have no respect for the Irishmen who died in the two World Wars given that's what the poppy is in remembrance of pplocal (Tyrone) - Posts: 5878 - 07/11/2010 21:59:34 811664 Link 0 |
