If it wasn't for the British a lot of those countries would still be in the dark ages, including Ireland. How long does it take a country to learn its own language? lol. Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 04/11/2010 11:46:50 809345 Link 0 |
Why GAA is better than soccer: Padraig Duffy's comments that the GAA can't help out every club. At least the GAA would be willing to help out clubs with financial difficulties, Soccer over here is content to watch its clubs slowly rot and die and the fans suffer. The guy that sits opposite me is a Pompey fan and it has been terrible watching him suffer with all the rumours of the club being wound up. Fair enough wishfulthinkin, but by taking such a hardline approach it is the fans that suffer. The owners disappear into the sunset, the players move onto other clubs. It is the fans who suffer because one or two individuals couldn't manage the finances properly. I would guess it is a similar scenario with GAA clubs; one or two individuals make bad financial decisions and the rest of the club members suffer. Tis not a good way to run things. tongo it is if u live outside dublin as you can get transfer easy but try getting a transfer in dublin to another club its impossible unfair that country guys can come to dublin clubs and dublin born people cant transfer, you dont sign a contract like in soccer you dont get paid so what right do they have to stop you playing football.this is 1 thing the gaa should take from soccer hill16no1man (Dublin) - Posts: 12665 - 04/11/2010 17:53:50 809725 Link 0 |
and Tongo, unlike soccer clubs that are owned..GAA clubs are run by the locality, there is AGM and elections every year so if they are unhappy with the way things are being run, they can change it on a yearly basis..and they can change it more frequently if they want to wishfulthinkin (Cavan) - Posts: 1732 - 04/11/2010 19:33:27 809827 Link 0 |
hill16no1man Dublin players can transfer out of Dublin just as easily as players who transfer in. They just don't want to as the flow of emigration tends to flow the other way I suppose. Transferring within any county is always difficult if the club being asked to release the player isn't happy with the situation. If Dublin clubs choose to ignore their own young players for outside talent well that's up to them I'm afraid. doublehop (Kildare) - Posts: 4172 - 04/11/2010 20:20:05 809872 Link 0 |
wishfulthinkin: a year's plenty of time to screw things up financially. Anyway, my point was that often with financial problems it is the masses who suffer because of the actions of one or two. Tongo (UK) - Posts: 1795 - 04/11/2010 21:58:06 809992 Link 0 |

First Time poster. Its so true about the GAA we should cherish and be proud of it and what it means to us Irish. Im an Aston Villa supporter for nearly 20 years and went over to watch them recently play Chelsea at Villa Park. You cant even compare it players strolling around the pitch, some of them cant even string two passes together and on nearly 50 thousand pounds a week. I was in Croke Park for the Galway Tipp All-Ireland Hurling Qtr Final this year, I was out of breath at the end of it and I was just watching it. The two teams just tore into each other for the 70 minutes amazing intensity and very high skill levels. Galway lost by a point and some of the Galway players coming of the field crying absolutely devestated. You cant even compare the two experiences. That feeling of euphoria and joy I got in 1998 when Galway won the football All-Ireland for the first time in 32 years. I know the GAA isn't perfect by any means but what it does for local comunnities and the sense of togetherness about it. Thanks for letting me get it off my chest. Fair point hill16no1man. Maybe there's a reason why certain players (i.e high profile inter-county players) are able to get transfers and the average player isn't! Tongo (UK) - Posts: 1795 - 05/11/2010 12:05:35 810159 Link 0 |
Totally agree with what you say mon. I was at the Tipp-Galway game too and my heart went out to the Galway fans, it was an incredible match. And you are right, it isn't perfect, and never will be, but it has many good points. Tongo (UK) - Posts: 1795 - 05/11/2010 12:08:14 810161 Link 0 |
