Should the Shinty/Hurling now take centre stage?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

After the poor fair in Limerick on Saturday, and little or no interest shown by the association in the Shinty/Hurling International versus their counterparts in Scotland, I was wondering the Shinty/Hurling would be a better spectacle? I cannot find the Irish squads anywhere on the web for the hurling.

It should but it won't. A game of under 9 camaint would be better entertainment than that compromise rules stuff sure.

Anyone know how the panel is selected for this? As far as I can see there is no-one from Tipperary, Galway or Dublin selected?

Three of the top hurlers in country ARE playing - Tommy, Jackie Tyrell and Shane Dooley. But even apart from that would prefer watching Kerry, Westmeath and Laois hurlers than the muck we saw in Limerick last weekend :-)

In reply to the above, don't think this the case - the policy appears to have been to focus on the Ring/Rackard/Meagher Cup players for a good few years now. Recently, the likes of Tommy Walsh, THE top hurler in the country in my view, has been involved. To see Dooley, Horgan, Walsh, Tyrell in the squad is great for the other players. Also, It is very unfair on the other players to imply they are not top players. From a Westmeath perspective, McCormack & Murtagh are top notch. Murtagh had a relatively poor year, but Darren McCormack would be widely regarded as one of the best players Westmeath ever produced. Both have represented Leinster on merit too. Top hurlers from anyone's perspective.

Saw 2009 game on BBC Scotland. Agreed it was a smashing game, esp the finish. Would't have called the Irish team dissimilar to this year. Lot of Ring and Rackard players on it.

The problem is probably with shinty, as far as i know its not a very strong sport in scotland ,has a
very small base and a full irish team with all the top class hurlers on board would blow scotland
away. This thing about playing against teams from other sports with different rules and different
sports equipment ,and some of whom are professional , seems to me to be ridiculous. It would be
a far better idea if the Gaa could internationalise our games ,particularly hurling as there isnt anything
like it anywhere in the world , but i cant see that happening anytime soon .

clonjon the gaa cant nationalise hurling never mind go international with it there some countys only have 3 or 4 hurling clubs in them they should be trying to promote it there first

hill16, look at the corner back of the all stars. The man mountain himself, Jackie Charles Bronson Tyrell. From the greatest hurling club in Ireland, James Stephens.

I agree the shinty/hurling compromise rules game is a much better spectacle than the football disaster. It should be promoted much more and given a bigger stage. The last one I saw on telly was savage stuff. But probably wont happen as theres not much interest in Scotland and so wont attract major sponsorship like the football

I had the misfortune of sitting through one of these games a few years back, last week's game in Limerick was fantastic in comparison. Honestly awful.

I think it should be given a chance. The entertainment the hurlers give all year should be rewarded with an international dimension.
