John Hume Greatest Irish Person

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Rubbish series, considering what they could have done with it, but its one benefit may be to shut those up on these boards who continually harp on about nobody in the south liking Hume!

Wouldn't be my choice, but he's certainly up there. A wonderful man.

Mary Robinson should have got it but don't mind John Hume as he is a worthy champion of civil rights at home.

Voted for Connolly myself. Don't think any of the rest of them come up to him in terms of historical importance. But Hume way ahead of Bono and Robinson, definitely.

Give him the Presidency by agreement and no need for an election

i doubt he'd touch the presidency. he was asked before and said no. He'd make a great president though. Worthy winner. The show was ridiculous but kinda compulsive viewing. Obviously no beckett, yeats, joyce, wilde etc plus no one born before the mid 1800s. So many more deserved to be mentioned.

Arthur Griffith had a right to be included in the top 5. But then for some reason, we tend to blot him out of our history, and Im at a loss as to explain why.

Your wrong Scruffy!, He does get the credt he deserves. He was a Greater Irishman than Bono but his achievements were not the same as Collins, Hume or even Connolly

Bono should have won it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know he avoids paying tax here, whilst lecturing the government on how they should be giving more of the taxpayers cash to Third World dictatorships, but you know, he's a legend!

Tell you what laflour, we'll ask professor Ferriter next week about Arthur Griffith. He'll tell you exactly what I've just said.

Ferriter?! This the same Ferriter that allowed his book to be bought on behalf of the government to every primary school in the country? An individual that has no interest in being a professional historian, merely a popular one.

Griffith was a great man, to be sure, but the SF he founded had no relation to any subsequent incarnation of it. He advocated dual monarchy, which nobody would like now, he advocated a reserved response to the land issue, which nobody found popular at the time. He could not carry enough men with him in his own lifetime, or after, and therefore should not be considered one of the greatest ever.
