Are Irish people losing interest in a United Ireland??

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

According to the Sunday Times there has been a big fall in support for a United Ireland in the Republic over the last 4 years. The poll was conducted by RedC on October 4-6th.

57% favoured a United Ireland; 22% were against; and, 21% Don't Know.

The number in favour at 57% is down from 80% in a 2006 RedC poll.

Support was consistent across all demographic groups and regions of the country although it was notably higher among younger people (63%) and the Unemployed (73%).

I suspect the higher young and unemployed support can be explained by a higher support level for SF among those groups.

I'm still interested in a United Ireland but I'm not interested in another thread like this.

Correct. Sinn Fein historically gain most of their support from those too young to know better and those who are unemployable. I think the whole issue has become pretty irrelevant now. It's relatively peaceful in the North and in these times people only care about putting food on the table, not having to pay to look after the North. Anyway the vast majority of people in the North don't want it and of course their views should be respected

Is there a huge percentage of the North's work-force employed by the British gov. No way the Rep. could afford
that. From a financial p.o.v. it would be a disaster.
Thank God for the border at the moment. Most of my business is now with Northern companies. There is
nothing happening down here.

While I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who genuinely do not care for a United Ireland, I would hazard a guess that it is also way down on people's list of priorities at this moment in time. Ireland Inc is going nowhere fast, and unless seriously tough decisions are taken (which won't of course be taken) it could be generations before this country gets back to any kind of normality. While I'm sure the government will waste millions on having a big party for the 2016 anniversary, me thinks a United Ireland is further away than ever.

Maybe there would be more interest if reunification meant uniting with the 6 counties as part of Britain. Ireland as a independent republic has failed miserably - giving away the power over our health and education to a Rome based church who turned out to be child abusers, giving political power to the most corrupt and welathiest in society and now to top it off we are completely bankrupt.

Reunification with Britain makes practical sense but im sure some would object due to out-dated ideologies and nationalist bar-stool propaganda

Anyone know where, when etc these polls are conducted ?

If i wanted to conduct a poll of this type and had an anti united Ireland belief i would conduct it outside Methodist churches on a Sunday morning. If i had leanings towards a united Ireland i would conduct it outside a dole office on a Wednesday afternoon or a pub on a Saturday night.

This one was probably done in the West !!

I am beginning to lose the will to live with all these threads about a united Ireland and the Catholic faith. Surely there is some limit to how much garbage can be written and consumed.

Ah did we have to start another one of these threads!!!

I see the usual partitionist posters are out in force already spouting their garbage. Ireland will be united again and one of the longest running injustices will finally be put to rest. The sooner it happens the better.

Dont the people in the 6 counties get a say? A large percentage dont want a united ireland, that is the most important part of it, forget the rest of it. It isnt up to the people in the south to decide for them.

The same bar-stoolers who bleat about injustice are the ones who want to go against the wishes of approx. two thirds of the people in the North. It will be two seperate states until the people of the North decide, and that's the way it should be

You wont be forced upon us either. The electorate of the Republic of Ireland will have a referendum to determine if we are to manage and control Northern Ireland. I think both parties would be happy to leave the status quo as it is. Northern Irish people get state funded public sector cushy jobs and the Irish people wont have to put up with any of the nonsense that goes with it. The only loser in all this is the English who have to pander and financially support you.

Funny how everyone wants to slit their wrists when they see the same old united Ireand threads like this, yet ye all love these same old rubbish threads:

top 10 forwards,
top ten backs,
favourite county outside your own,
player you would like to have from another county,
.....etc, etc, and the like!!!

those are the threads that have me running my tounge over my cyanide capsule every time i see them!!!

This calls for more top 10 forwards threads so.

The reason you don't like those kind of threads snuffy is because they require a certain knowledge of GAA, which you blatantly do not have.

Not really. When they were here, they inflicted genocide upon the people, so if you'd like to go and die then thats your issue, you can deal with it. However, back to the point, I dont know what part of Irish history you dont understand, but you may have noticed Celts and Saxons do NOT get along well together.

No the way it should be is a 3 way referendum. The Republic will vote for re-unification, the people of Britain will vote for re-unification, the people of Northern Ireland will vote for the Union. Thats 2 out of 3 in favour of re-unification, this is a democracy and majority rules my friend.
