I remember a Saturday afternoon in Mick Byrnes that turned into a Saturday evening in Leonards in lahardane and a Saturday night in Crossmolina. The Wolfe Tones were playing in Leonards giving the locals what they wanted. Great day all the same.

Re patrique,
Self praise is no praise and let me tell you your not as good as you
think you are if your performance on the diamond in Clones is anything
to go by. The tree pubs around the Diamond Packie Willies, Paddy Freeman's
and the Cuil Darragh all clubbed together to give you a few pounds so that you
would move on and not be annoying their customers. Boom Boom.

The Tones are a good band, they wouldn't be doing it for this long if they were not.I'm sure thats irrelevant to those of you weighing in behind the initial criticizer who only wanted to cause annoyance anyway.

A lot of people affect to hate the Wolfe Tones because they hate republicanism. They were singing republican ballads well before the troubles started and most of their repoirtoire which some here are slagging off are traditional Irish ballads that bands like the Tones and Dubliners revived in the mid 60s. As for them not doing republican benefits and not playing in the north, that's just nonsense.

And of course Patrique and a lot of his mates beat them up in Galway one night. Lovely :-)

Please Mr Mulligan, do not be so uncultured.

Leaders do not fight, we have the cannon fodder do that for us.

Fair play to them, their music is absolute tripe but they know it will be lapped up by the Celtic/bar-stool Republican crowd

A music expert now as well!! Is there no end to this mans talent? Are you sure that you are not a member of the TUV, as your Celtic/Barstool republican jibes are quite similar to Jim Allister and his Sinn Fein/IRA catchphrase. I am not a particular fan of this group, however, I would suggest that PP's intense dislike of them is based more on his anti-republican viewpoint than anything else

'A music expert now as well!!'

?? I just don't like the music of the Wolfe Tones, I find them utterly devoid of any talent

Again I'm not particularly fussed on them, but they have been about for almost 50 years so there must be some talent

Are the Wolfe Tones Republican?

I'd disagree Pomeroy. Obviously, I don't like militant republicanism any more than you do. But at the same, I defy you to listen to 'Streets of New York' and not think that they can record some good music. Also, that song has the benefits of not glorifying the Provisional IRA or anything else. It's just a song about Ireland and our diaspora.

Whats wrong with glorifying the Provisional IRA? Oh I remember now, they are still too recent,we will have to wait a few years then we can wax lyrical about them just like we can now about Michael Collins and his boys.

As a southern free stater who has not experienced first hand, and relies to a greater extent for my information from southern media(biased of course) for the goings on in Northern Ireland I am probly not fit in your eyes to say whats wrong with them, but might i suggest you consult with relatives of the victims of Enniskillen bombing for a first hand opinion.

There's no accounting for taste, Bob the Builder has found chart success although I grant you that he is more talented than the Wolfe Tones. It's a good enough song Seamus but in a minority for them. When you consider some of the bands Ireland have produced from the Pogues to the Horslips, the Dubliners to the Fureys they simply can't compare. The most famous song they have made has the verse of 'oh ah up the ra', lyrical genius it ain't

Nobody is trying to put the wolf tones on a pedestal, they are what they are. Not great.

When luke kelly, the dubliners, the clancys etc sang republican songs despite their obvious musical genius it must have hurt some people who dislike the republican tradition. Of course it is suitable to many people beliefs that the only people who call themselves republican are celtic jersey wearing, prejudice idiots, bar stool republicans. It's a little disconcerting when you speak to someone who calls themselves a republican but who is none of those things. I'm a republican but I've never seen this band. I've had the misfortune to hear them on cd etc over the years. Tommy makem they ain't. Plenty of great traditional musicians out there who give enough time to republican politics without it turning into a glorification of glasgow celtic. Ever hear of the johnsons?? I believe they're from newry??
Also paul brady and van morrison are brilliant recent musicians who have are not republican but whose music is incredible. Brian cowen gave an infamous rendition of the lakes of ponchartrain during his galway session. I love that song but its funny to think of cowen singing the lyrics: "I cursed all foreign money; no credit could I gain."
