Why the hate for hurling

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I read a thread on a county forum where hurling was ridiculed as being an easy sport to play and that 1 Liam McCarthy is the equivalent of 5 Sam Maguires, I had to laugh. The point that was trying to be made was that there is only a couple of teams that can win the hurling but the same is also true with the football. Was this just an isolated incident or is that the common concensus, thoughts

They may have meant the Liam McCarthy would fit into the Sam Maguire 5 times. Sam is quite a bit bigger.

Hurling is the greatest game ever invented, I love football but it's a poor second to hurling.

Nothing comes close to the magnificent game of hurling. This game is known all around the world. For some idiot to claim that it is an "easy" game, must be out of his/her mind!
I remember a good few years ago, a group of french students watched a game of hurling here while on an exchange. They were mesmerised by what they saw, and promptly bought hurleys and sliothars back to France with them.

Hurling is far more skillful no question but football is a far more exciting championship. Hurling will always be 2nd to football in terms of prestigue.

agree totally with county man the hurling is far better to watch for the skill element but the football championship is far more competitive

Dad told me about a story when he was at College in Wales and on the Sunday of the All Ireland final a load of the Welsh Lads had gathered to watch a soccer match on the Tv but it had been cancelled due to some reason and in its place the Tv station put on the Hurling..He said the Welsh lads were aboslutely mesmirised at the skill on display and the tenacity of the players and how they took so many tough hits compared to soccer

By the fact that only a handful of counties actually care about Hurling? Would it be fair to say given the lack of competition in the Hurling Championship one Sam Maguire equals 20 Liam McCarthy's? Surely it does detract from the euphoria somewhat knowing that the vast majority of counties in Ireland view Hurling as the poor relation and that most counties couldn't care less? Or are Kilkenny Gaels happy to the Kings of the second sport in Ireland, the best of the 5 or 6 counties that concentrate on the Hurling?

Mystery solved.

Not on this thread, but it's far more prevalent than hate for hurling.

I wouldn't agree with that at all, I have never heard football being ridiculed like hurling is. I enjoy football and don't class them as 2 different sports, I always played both sports as did 99% of my club so to hear this kind of talk is alien to me, I just wanted to hear the rest of the countrys opinion on this topic.

You're obviously from a different part of Tipp to me...

Anyway I wouldn't take this too seriously. PomeroyPlunkett likes nothing more than professing his dislike of Hurling, Sinn Fein, Celtic FC and football teams like Mayo, Dublin and other "nearly teams".

Just ignore the anti-Hurling brigade. Of all the games that i've seen this year, the Galway-Offaly Leinster s-f replay and the Galway-Tipp q-f were by some distance the best two. There may only be a few counties that can compete for Liam, but what quality matches they produce.
