782800 Is the issue here simply that this article was published in an English newspaper? If it had been written in USA Today or Le Marca or L'Equipe or Die Welt, would there have been the same reaction from certain posters?

Essentially correct Tongo.

If the paper was any other nationality they wouldn't of found it 'patronising'.

Why would someone write an editorial praising the GAA to make jibes?

I shall bear that in mind MesAmis if ever my book on GAA travels gets published. I shall claim to be any other nationality than English as clearly my thoughts and experiences would be deemed patronising and i would no doubt be accused of knowing nothing about GAA due to being English. Ho hum!

I find the fact that you think you could write a book about OUR sports patronising............

An interesting thread Pat, from a GAA perspective over here in England any press which highlights our great games are to be accepted with open arms. If only you lot knew how hard it is to keep the game going over here.

Thank you the Guardian for highlighting some of the finer parts of the GAA, while i understand some getting slightly sensitive about the comments around the jobs mentioned. I think an over reaction by some, as has already been said. Time to move on guys..... I bet the same guys who are criticising the article also criticise the Orange order for living in the past........

On Sunday about 80,000 football fans gathered in Dublin's Croke Park to watch Cork defeat Down. There was no segregation of supporters, no need for stewards in high-visibility jackets or even police officers.

Erm, yeah there was, bout 1000 of them ensuring people didn't celebrate in a traditional Iirsh way.

"But the sport of the people is, and will forever be, football (soccer). The Beautiful Game."

Loyal:

Maybe the people should wise up & realise that the so-called beautiful game has devolved into an ugly farce?
