Sunday Game Team of the Year

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The Sunday Game Team of year will not even be close to the real all-star selection. Then again what does all-star actually stand for as Tadhg Kennellys selection last year completely devalued these awards IMO (noting against TK, really admire what he has acheived but it was a joke that he won an all-star).
John Doyle should be in there, as should John Galvin and Justin McMahon. Reaction to Gooch selection is alarming, thought he had great year and was superb for Kerry in championship. What about Owen Mulligan and Donie Shine, one time a player would be rewarded with an all-star as recognition for top performance in the provincial championships?

Have to say I was disgusted at the treatment of Johnny Doyle, being invited onto the Sunday Game and then being told that he had been 'in the running' for left half forward but Paddy Kelly just pipped him. Shocking stuff. Don't get me wrong Kelly is a good player but nowhere near team of the year or an allstar. Also can't understand McVeigh not being named, and how can coulter be left out? He was being mentioned in some quarters as a player of the year candidate before the match and in my opinion played well yday. Cooper being named is a joke, sure why not pick the team at the start of the championship and save the bother. My allstar team would be;

1. McVeigh (best around)
2. Only position I'm not sure on. Peter Kelly, D Rafferty and R Carey all have strong claims)
3. Shields (Has everything for a defender)
4. Philip McMahon (Great newcomer, dubs need more like him)
5. Kissane (Highly impressed with him all year, outstanding)
6. McKernan (really stepped up to the mark this season, could be Down's Mc)
7. Bolton (Not sure though, think Jordan or O'Leary might come close)
8. Keenan (best midfielder in the country this year)
9. Aidan Walsh (Galvin close but think Walsh on his final display, just)
10. Hughes (Down's player of the season)
11. Clarke (and young player of the year)
12. Doyle (rolls royce of a footballer, class act)
13. Coulter (Got the chance to show his class on the big stage at last)
14. Brogan (Player of the year)
15. Goulding (Or O'Connor, however Goulding more consistent)

Any thoughts?

You could see the disappointment on Johnny Doyle's face last night on The Sunday Game and how he was left off that team was scandalous as was Brendan McVeigh's absence. Have to disagree with some about the Gooch's form, I thought he was excellent this year.

John Galvin is a superb player but in defense of the panelists who chose the team they only got to see Galvin play twice this year on tv and although Galvin was brilliant against Kerry, he was relatively poor against Cork. It is very hard to judge anyone on two games.

779268 Gooch was not outstanding this year.... He shouldn't be getting his place because of his reputation. if it is that way then why not have Paul Galvin, Tomas O'Shea and Declan O'Sullivan on the team as well.
Danial Goulding deserves to be on it because of his performance on the highest stage. Gooch was not there this year and even in the games he played.. he had moments but did not dominate any game...not one game...

Why not Paul Galvin or Tomas O Se. Have you heard of the CCCC, did you miss the whole thing or do you only watch the ulster football championship. These guys were out for the key games, so your point is ridiculous.
Gooch had probably his best year for about 3 years. So, Kerry didnt make it to the final. If the rest of the kerry team had played like the Gooch, Sam would be resting in the kingdom. Its difficult to dominate a game when you're the only lad playing well.
Any points he gets from frees are invariably ones hes won himself as a result of bamboozling whoever is marking him. In the 2 games against Cork and in particular against Down he was absolutely on fire, he had his marker twisted in knots. The two defence splitting hand passes he played through to Donaghy to hand him a goal on a plate (which McVeigh brilliantly saved) were worth the entrance fee alone. If you're assuming he only got the nod because of his reputation, then you're clearly showing that you only watched a limited number of matches in the early phase of the championship.
That said, i'd happily see Doyle ahead of him. He was outstandng this year.

If Shine got an All- Star he would challenge Walsh for young player of the year!

Like all of you, I was shocked that John Doyle was left off the team. The guy is in the running for footballer of the year, let alone making the Sunday Games best 15. He should have been there over Colm Cooper. Apart from that, I wouldn't have any complaints about the rest of the team.

779379 one game vs kerry! you were surely watchin the championship! He was basicially man of the match in every game, vs waterford he was emmence and he took kerry apart on his own. Cork struggled at the quilifers to overcome limerick mainly as galvin was the chief organiser and main man!! Reason enough

It wasn't one good game, he also gave an excellent performance against Cork in the qualifiers. He has talent, leadership and determination. He would get into any of the top teams of the country. I think because he is from Limerick and they have not got to the Croke Park end of the game, he does not get the recognition that he deserves. I would also go with Paddy Keenan in midfield

Ok fair enough, I didn't see the Waterford game so shouldn't have made that comment, but he wasn't allstar standard against Cork and there are other candidates so its not as straightforward as to simply say he was robbed.

Walsh was consistent to outstanding throughout the championship and delivered big time in the All-Ireland final. He deserves one, and I give Keenan the marginal nod for the other spot ahead of Galvin and McAuley

I have no problems with Cooper being selected on TV pundits team as he had a good season and has shown yet again he is top man. Felt sorry for Johnny Doyle and i thought John Galvin did enough to have got one of the midfield slots.

What about Claffey the Roscommon keeper never conceded a goal until the cork game,
And Alan Costello from sligo he kicked 4-5 points per match sum fantastic scores from distance
how he can not even be suggested is very disappointing.

have ta say johnny doyle bein left out of da toty was an injustice to da man, yet again mcstay an carney demonstrate wat they really no bout football. doyle was top scorer in 2008 but because kildare only reached da quarters he wasn,t considered for an all star an yet da gooch is. nothin against da gooch he's been da best footballer over da last couple of yrs but this yr i think there r other players who deserve it more like coulter and kavanagh who had a fantastic yr

Possibly the biggest blunder ever made on live television. To have the cheek to ask John Doyle to come and participate in the show when he wasn't included in the team just shows -----

Im starting to get really angry about having John Doyle on the programme and not on the team, something that didn't initially twig with me such was my amazement that he was left of the team, someone needs a few lashes of the cat o' nine tails for that one, highly embarrising for all concerned and no way to treat Doyle.
