Sunday Game Team of the Year

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

How in God's name was Johnny Doyle left off this team, top scorer in Championship and played his heart out all year, whilst I appreciate that this selection is not up there in the list of top accolades it still makes you wonder what some of these "expert" boys do be thinking of. And if Colm Cooper was deserving of a spot then so was Graham Reilly of Meath who had an outstanding first year. Im going for a ride about Fairyhouse on my high horse now!!

Richie,

Too right. First time I've agreed with a Meathman this summer. Hope Doyle gets what he deserves when allstars come around.

Colm Cooper on Team of the Year

What a Joke John Doyle, what more does he have to do. If Gooch gets an all star we may as well just forget it

A disgrace that Johnny Doyle was left out, as for Gooch Cooper being chosen, the mind boggles, it was the most non-eventful year the chap ever had....thrilled to see Michael Darragh Mc Auley there, so deserved and Philly Mc Mahon too, it was a toss up between Philly and Rory O'Carroll.....must have been difficult for Johnny Doyle sittn in the audience...very very unfair.....

Gooch getting on that team is farcical and proves what we always said on here. If a non kerry man scores a standard point its a good score, if a kerryman scores from 3 yards out its a touch of genius....
McStay and Carney are besotted with them

I'd have to agree. In saying that, he did have a dodgy patch where his free taking and some shots (against Meath and Down think) went a bit wayward. I felt for the guy last night but this may have been the issue which swayed the decision. I'd question the wisdom of inviting him into the RTE studio with Brogan and Keenan and then not awarding him his place on the TOTY. You could see that he was struggling to keep his composure in front of the cameras. It might have made for interesting TV but I'm sure he didnt sign up for that. He's an amateur after all.

The only sight of genius ye've ever seen in Limerick has been with an oval ball. You wouldnt have a clue what to look for in gaelic football.
He didnt get far enough in the championship to get an all-star but to give him his dues, he was on fire since the start of the championship, and especially against Down.

Corxxx no limerick geniuses no?
Ever heard of Mick Mackey? ever heard of a game called Hurling?
Gooch wouldnt lace his boots as a "genius"

It was a disgrace leaving Johnny Doyle out, who ever selected that team must not have watched any of the Kildare games, Johnny is not a stay in the forward line and wait for ball to come to you type of player, he covers every blade of grass on the pitch, he is forever chasing back helping out the defence or battling in midfield picking up breaking ball and despite all the work he does he still managed to be top scorer in the championship. I know if I was picking a best team from all the players in Ireland my first choice guaranteed would be Johnny Doyle.

Have to agree that leaving Johnny Doyle out is a disgrace, I've been a big fan of the Gooch over the years but this year simply wasn't one of his better ones and he didn't deserve to be on that team selected last night and there should be no ifs or buts about it....McStay, Tohill, Carney et all you have made a bags of the selection and devalued it in most peoples eyes......

Johnny Doyle even the Dubs think you should have been on it....Top Man!!!

Its a hard one, Gooch did play really well in the championship but practically year in, year out the team of the year has been taken mostly from the last four teams. Johnny Doyle does deserve to be part of this panel. However, last year, Gooch was the hightest scoring player but if I remember correctly was not included in the Sunday Game Panels Team of the Year. ...so winning such an honour that does not seem to gaurentee a place in the Sunday Game's panel or even an All Star. Their method of picking seems to be subjective. I would have had McVeigh as goalie and John Galvin in midfield.

Did not see the full team, caan someone put up here. Johnny Doyle has been instrumental in all positive in Kildare football over the last decade. What sums him up though is his overall workrate, (remember he came out to midfield and made that massive catch from a kick out, and sent in that last ball which resulted in the free/crossbar incident v Down). A marvellous footballer (and a modest man),who will surely get his reward with an All Star later in the year.
Them lads McStay/Carney/Davis wouldnt pick their noses!

The team named was:

1) A. Quirke (good year but for me McVeigh was tops)
2) P. Kelly
3) M.Shields (good year, Dan Gordon's transformation to full back deserves mention)
4) P.McMahon
5) P. Kissane
6) K.McKernan
7) E.Bolton
8) P.Keenan (well deserved)
9) M.D. McAuley (possibly, although there will be a dissappointed Limerick man)
10) D. Hughes
11) M.Clarke (Lovely footballer)
12) P.Kelly (Graham Reilly has claims here)
13) D. Goulding (no arguments)
14) B.Brogan (a shoe in)
15) C.Cooper (great footballer, but not deserving here this year in my humble opinion)

The Gooch included defies all logic. Was it a case of a token Kerry man on the team. Its not a sin to omit Kerry from the team

Quirke - Cork
Kelly- Kildare

Think im right on that. Correct me if im not.

Id say only Clarke, Brogan , Shiels & possibly Mc Kernan are shoe-ins for All Stars from that team...
