Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh to retire

What a legend! I remember a great comment made during a Munster hurling championship match a few years ago involving Clare: "He runs into Markham...He runs into Lohan...When you run into Lohan, you run into trouble"

Everyone in our house thought I was mad, whenever a game was on the telly I would turn down the volume and listen to Michael on the radio. He had a wonderful knack of making a poor game sound good.A great commentator whose boots will be very hard to fill.

There is noone in the media in Ireland who can hold a candle to this man.His passion, his belief, his sincerity came out in every single match you heard him commentate on.His voice was so evocative that although you listened from a cramped car,a grandparents house or a sunny beach in summer, a part of you wished you could be there, next to him, watching the game and listening to this great man at work. The most mundane game could be brought to life by a passing yarn about a particular player or manager;he did justice to each big match he covered also, as Míchaels presence at a game with mike in hand meant this game was a big deal, this was going to be something special. He spoke in English but expressed in Irish, ensuring Gaeilgeoirí as an tír seo were not left out.

A legend in his own lifetime, thanks Míchael, enjoy your retirement.

My father insists on getting the radio coverage of All Ireland finals recorded so he can listen to Micheal afterwards..I used to think he was daft but now I do the same. One of the undoubted greats of our beloved GAA

Ah I know, my post was purely in relation to the Louth poster saying a similar comment was typical Cavan.

PS, i don't think you can change your county now I'm afraid.

Meet the Man while walking to croke park in April for the National Football league Final against waterford. Chatted to us like he knew us all our lives.
Big loss to the Radio wont be the same leaving games and listening to the radio on the way home and hearing him commenate.

775853 I wont miss him... Never a fan to be honest. Respect his longevity, but i wanted to listen to match commentary, not someones life story, or who was listening in whatever part of the world... Ruined games for me.... But thats just my opinion

Agreed Damien.

Love the one when a wasp got into the press box during a Munster championship commentary from Thurles a good number of years back & caused a near riot. Micheál kept on describing the game in his usual manner while also describing with great hiliarity the frantic efforts around him of those trying to evade the wasp.

Love the man. A true gent & will be irreplacable.

Ní bheidh do leithéid arís ann a Mhichíl. Go raibh maith agat ó chroí.

i thought micheal was going to carry on for a few more years, he's dead right to quit before he gets sick of it. I met the man above in croke park a few years ago and he was an absolute gentleman. I preferred him to the likes of brian carthy and ger canning. I guess carthy must be the favourite to take over from him although wouldn't mind seeing pauraic lodge or con murphy given a chance too

It will be an absolute privilege to say that his last ever commentary was between my own county Down, and Cork :)

The guy was a legend and his contribution to GAA will not be forgotten. Some of my Cork-related favourites...

"Colin Corkery on the 45 lets go with the right boot. Its over the bar. This man shouldn't be playing football. He's made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man but he couldn't kick points like Colin Corkery".

"Cork's Anthony Lynch is the last person who will leave you down. His people are undertakers".

"Teddy McCarthy to Seanie McCarthy, no relation, Seanie McCarthy back to Teddy, still no relation."

My favourite Micheal quote:

And Brian Dooher is down injured. And while he is, I'll tell ye a little story. I was in Times Square in New York last week, and I was missing the Championship back home. So I approached a news stand and I said: "I suppose ye wouldn't have The Kerryman, would ye?" To which the Egyptian behind the counter turned to me and he said: "Do you want the North Kerry edition or the South Kerry edition?". He had both. So I bought both. And Dooher is back on his feet.
