Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh to retire

I have to say I feel a little lonelier this morning - a gent of a man, and a wonderful commentator. The weekends won't be the same.

Great Commentator..The way he use to switch from english to irish in the middle of a particular piece of play was great......He could make a bad game sound good with his stories...He will be sadly missed

Fantastic commentator. For all of us stranded abroad listening to this mans passion for both hurling and football every sunday was and still is a joy.

RTE radio have a massive hole to fill.

Micheal O'Hehir, Micheal O'Muircheartaigh, who is going to become the next to join this dynasty of commentators. Absolute legends.

A great man, a fantastic commentator and a brilliant servant of the GAA. He'll always get the plaudits for the big games but all the awards nights, charity matches and other promotion of the games he has done is astounding. The word legend gets thrown around but with Michael it's nearly an understatement. His first assignment was the 1949 Railway Cup Final! Incredible...

His voice will be missed and radio commentary will never be the same again. I especially remember his commentary of the Munster Hurling Final replay in 1991 between Cork and Tipperary. It was unbelievable. I had the privilege to meet him in Killarney at the Munster replay in 1987. A lovely man. Enjoy your retirement Micheal.

we will miss you micheal, a true gent and brilliant commentator. It came to me as a bit of a shock when i heard of his retirement it was nice that the last hurling final he commentated on was a tipp victory. Enjoy your retirement micheal i hope to see you around, the late late show should do a tribute show for him. I guess brian carthy will be taking over from him sorry i don't find him as good think i'll listen to ger canning in future. Happy retirement you legend micheal rte is a sadder place without you

A great commentator and a great man. To call him a legend is an understatement of his talent. His ability to capture and engage with his audience is second to none. He will be sorely missed by the entire GAA family.

what a typical comment from a cavan man.

"... and Brian Dooher is down injured. And while he is, i'll tell ye a
little story. I was in Times' Square in New York last week, and I was
missing the Championship back home. So I approached a newsstand and I
said 'I suppose ye wouldn't have the Kerryman (Paper) would ye?' To
which, the Egyptian behind the counter turned to me and he said 'do you
want the North Kerry edition or the South Kerry edition?'... he had
both...so I bought both. And Dooher is back on his feet..."

"Sean Og o Hailpin.... his father's from Fermanagh, his mother's from
Fiji, neither a hurling stronghold."

The man is a National Treasure. Enjoy your retirement!

I grew up listening to Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, learned a lot from this great man through his passion for everything GAA and Irish. His commentary skills will be severly missed on match day. He is part and parcel of the championship and his stories are legendary and funny to the core. I watched an interview he gave on the Late Late show some time ago and he made me feel very proud of my Irish GAA routes. He spoke tremedously about his family and friends and how they are a major part of his life.

Mícheál a true gentleman of the GAA, I hope you enjoy your retirement and whatever you pursue in the future.

ONE FINAL COMMENT - NOW Mícheál IS RETIRING THE NEXT LEGEND WILL BE OUR JOE BROLLY.

p.mus is a typical Cavan man and represents our views with every utterance.

George Hamilton will be the main man now and I can wait to hear him on radio commentation on the big games. Michael will be a distant memory afer george's commentary kicks in and you won't hear George laughing at the hurling capability of Fermanagh of Figi for that matter.

I wont miss him... Never a fan to be honest. Respect his longevity, but i wanted to listen to match commentary, not someones life story, or who was listening in whatever part of the world... Ruined games for me.... But thats just my opinion
