Pope Benedict's visit to the UK.

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Ian Paisley and 60 members of his Free Presbyterian church are to travel to Scotland this week to protest against Benedict's visit to Britain. I suppose we would be surprised and disappointed if they didn't. Thoughts?

I will be with him.

The trip costs millions when we are making public sector cuts. So instead of having a hospital or a school we have the pope.

We need to get our priorities right.

By the way, which Paisley? Big Ian is not in the best of health for going anywhere.

people have said by wiping big ian out , would have made him a martyr , and it would have been the wrong thing to do .

martyr or no martyr in unionist circles , i would have deposed of him years ago , he should have gone , bitter excuse of a human being .

So one old reactionary fundamentalist with a dodgy past is going to protest about the presence of another old reactionary fundamentalist with a dodgy past, big deal.

Storm in a tea cup. The pope has visited the middle east before so a few hot and bothered auld orange men wont be much to concern him.

Also Ta, I'd add Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams to that genre of human being also.

I see 60 odd old Bible Bashers from the FP Church Going over to England to protest at the Visit of Pope Benedict ,theres me thinking that the Rev Ian had got more tolerant in his old age but like the Old saying Leopards never change there spots.

They wont be the only ones protesting. Many disillusioned and mistreated Catholics I'm sure won't be happy to see him either.

Never mind the thread Bible Bashes , last night on BBC and C4 there was a little papal bashing Panorama ran a programme called what the Pope knew about dealing about sex abuse and C4 ran a programme called the Trouble with the pope about his beliefs and polices , now am not very religious but I find it very strange that these programmes should be focusing on such issues on the eve of his visit to the UK, I mean if the same programme makers were to show a programme about some Iranian Ayatollah or other Muslim Religious Cleric the would hundreds of thousand protesters with dubious looking beards burning flags and effigies demanding Allah strike down these Infidels, I bet there will be more programmes on Cardinal Joseph Alois Ratzinger before the end of the week.

The act of protest is a very republican ideal, fair play to him and anyone else that feels the need to protest such our very own fr Horan.

What is Ian doing wrong here? He has many many RC constituents, many of whom vote for him, and they feel destroyed by the behaviour of the RC Church and this Pope. The Pope is the head of an awful awful "church"

It should if nothing else be an entertaining protest because lets face it, its one bigoted hypocrite preaching morals to another bigoted hypocrite.

fortyfive, thats because the "Iranian Ayatollah or other Muslim Religious Clerics" havent been accused of covering up child abuse, (for which universally I believe people are abhorred by), nor if I recall correctly were they members of the hitler youth.

Anyone who believes Ian Paisley is protesting on behalf of his RC constituents has either a short memory or has been beamed down here from another planet. I will let you each decide what is your situation. But fair play to Ian because those who have longer memories and not been beamed down from another planet will be reminded why things are like they are in the Island of Ireland.

Paisley's problem with the Pope is one of envy. Big Ian would dearly love to be the spiritual leader of a billion people and welcomed with the greatest respect in almost every corner of the globe. Alas he set up his own 'church' in which he made himself 'pope', not to mention his own quasi religious fundamentalist political party which naturally he lead like a 'pope' for 40 years. Problem is most sensible people realise he is just a bitter bigot with delusions of grandeur that will never be fulfilled.

On a wider scale, the reaction to the Pope's visit betrays the anti - Catholic sentiment which is rife in the British establishment. I suppose old habits die hard.
