Mollymalone, we're all entitled to our opinions you don't like the game fair enough. but...

Aussie Rules is a load of rubbish,
Its not Aussie rules

should have been finished for good.
who do you think you are? David Lloyd George?

Why would any manager want to risk any of (but in particular) their better players for that series
.
It's up to the players - what have managers got to do with it?

I wish to God there were NO dublin players on the damn thing.
Well the Dublin players themselves wished to God they were on the panel

As you'll gather, Im not a fan at all. Not a patch on our games and only puttn our players at risk
Yes I've gathered that, see you in Croker on the 30th

787383 I like the international rules but if this year is in any way a repeat of what we seen in 2008 in Australia then it should be discontinued. After what happened in Croker in 2006 we whinged about the Aussies being too rough and so when the series came round in 2008 it was as though the aussies were frightened to touch us and so it became a Gaelic football match with one or two exceptions. I am not saying that all out brawls is what we want to see but the physical side of things was lowered considerably in '08

In no proper sport in the world is it permissable for a player to strike an opponent, this happened in 2006 and there was no action taken and no sanctions. Aussie rules players at home were critical of the cowardly antics of their own players. Physical is OK but punching and mauling off the ball isn't. So if the game is played like most other sports in good spirit, ie sportingly, then it's a great game.
Unless you saw a different game people were correct to complain that the aussie players overstepped the mark, something that they don't do in their own game. Whinging is when there is no substance to an argument!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Spot on, ochonlir. The Aussies have enough of an advantage physically with the tackle, interchange and with being professional. They shouldn't need to resort to sling tackles (yes you, Danyle Pearse) or clotheslining people (everyone remembers, Chris Johnson. You total coward). I didn't see anything wrong with the 2008 games and it didn't look like the Aussies were holding back - they just weren't punching anyone. The 2003 series was best I've seen (just my opinion) and there was hardly a foul blow struck in the two matches.

It was noticeable that the Aussie players most looking for trouble in '06 were the likes of Chance Bateman (the guy with the long rat on his head) who never take on a ruckman in the AFL. In fact, I remember specifically Bateman jogging over toward Dermot Earley, gradually realising how big he was and turning and jogging the other way. Barry Hall barely put his hands on anyone in that game. It's not whinging to point out cowardice or thuggery. It'd only be whinging if the Irish were equally guilty, which they weren't, or complaining about legitimate aggression. Remember the open baiting of Graham Geraghty in the run up to the second test in 2006? Are we supposed to believe it was a coincidence that him and Ireland's star players - Kennelly, Begley etc - were taken out in the first quarter? It's a simple enough request to make of Aussie players - if you don't do it in the AFL, don't to it in Int Rules.

One other thing, a couple of years back, Brisbane Broncos NRL team (containing former Wicklow minor Brian Carney, I believe) issued a challenge to Brisbane Lions to play some kind of compromise match. The AFL vetoed it on the grounds that their players might get hurt. If we're willing to risk our players against pros when they wont risk their players against other pros, I think we're entitled to ask that they obey rules which favour them anyway.

Speaking of Aussie things, I caught the end of a piece on Sean Moncrieff's show on Newstalk about an Aboriginal team touring Ireland - anyone know anything about this?

Also, Kevin Sheedy had an idea about making Int Rules a triangular thing

http://www.irishecho.com.au/2010/08/25/sheedy-proposes-three-cornered-hybrid-series/4813

I think it's a great idea. It'd mean a lot to those lads to pull on a jersey representing their people (and rip into a few white Aussies, no doubt) and would add a whole new, less claustrophobic dimension to the series. The only downside is the potential for asking amateur lads to go from and Irish late autumn too summer in Darwin to play against professionals. That'd have to be avoided.

If you like International Rules, that Sheedy idea is a terrible one. How long will the 'indigenous' and 'non-indigenous' teams play the hybrid sport before they realise they could just play each other in Aussie Rules?

If (like me) you don't like the International Rules, then it's a great idea. I hope it happens.

Dick Clerkin (Monaghan) has been one of the top mikdfielders in the country in 2010. He also would take no nonsence from the Aussies!

can not believe Dick Clerkin has not been selected.thought he was a cert for this.he also got number 9 ulster allstar this year.would have suited this game to a tee.
Tohill allways slagged him off on tv,is this why? Derry v Monaghan history?

Australia have picked a top side for this trip and many of the top stars have declared an interest, including Gary Ablett. This is more likely to be a real contest and there will be less hanky-panky.! I think you will find the Aussies will be highly competitive... they have started training a few weeks ago and werewaiting on the team members from the Gradn Final (delayed / replay). It is so easy in print to denigrate, without fact - so for you sir, Kennelly left Sydney yesterday to participate.!!

Where did you hear this? I heard he flew in yesterday and will be training with the squad on Thursday.

Tommy Walsh was training in Ashbourne on Friday.

Money wasting sham of a game. The GAA should abandon this nonsensical game and promote its own games in a more supportive manner

I agree but they have not a notion as they think players kicking thumped around the field is ok.

Id like to have seen Cathal Cregg in there. He is a great ball carrier and would suit the game perfectly. Also I would like to see Brian White in there and John Galvin. 3 players I feel would add hugely to the team.

Is Jap the only Monaghan player involved?

Thought Dick would've been a cert, he would have been perfect for this game.

"Money wasting sham of a game".

Think some people need to check their facts. These games through gate receipts and sponsorship will generate money for the gaa. It will also keep the gaa players in the headlines at a time of year when they are usually ignored by the media.
