Dell,

You asking why the GPA hasn't made a public statement denouncing one of their members, yet you have always refused to contenance ANY criticism of referees by anyone on here?
A little bit hypocritical????

If the GPA felt that he was justified in striking a referee then they would be up in arms to defend him. The GPA's purpose is to look after player welfare. Breaches of discipline by players are not under the GPA's remit unless they feel the player is treated unfairly in his punishment.

Put it this way, if a member of Sinn Féin was arrested for drunk driving, should Gerry Adams be expected to make a statement on it? Of course not.

Shouldn't have done it, gets what he deserves in my opinion.

As for tarring the whole of Derry with the same brush, give it a rest, you would think that this business goes on in none of the other counties. For crying out loud there were people condoning Martin Sludden getting attacked because he ballsed up the game!

Also, Dell would have put money on it you would be the first person on here with a thread trying to stir things up.

I generally feel that Bradley got exactly what he deserves. Anything less would be too little but anything more would have been too long. I do not personally agree with lifetime bans as every individual is capable of maturing to realise their mistake and should be given the opportunity to attone for their actions. I think that as opposed to looking at the culture of setting example we need to look at refereeing and attitudes towards refs at grassroots levels. Too often a culture of abuse is cultivated at youth levels and I think money and lots of time should be invested in emphasising at all clubs and schools that refs are an intricate part of our game and should be respected. However, I also feel that players deserve to have impartial and well trained refs as they committ so much to preparing for games and competitions. In many cases clubs are pressurised into finding refs and are nominating people to do the job who they know are not capable. We should start looking at younger people as future refs and should prepare them as they are playing. This can only help players respect more when they are asked to ref as well. My big bug bear with refereeing is that only ex-refs score current refs. Perhaps a constructive input from players and managers would help promote common sense refereeing???
