Ray Cosgrove and that great Armagh team

Whelan scored a cracker of a goal that day. Right after Paddy McKeever practically ran the ball into the Dublin net.

It was sad to see Cosgrove's Dublin career slip away after that year.

Don't agree boys hit numerous long range frees and 45s for Leitrim in his day, I just didn't think he was introduced that day for anything other than to hit 45s or long range frees as his influence in open play had long weaned by then. Check out his winning 45 V Roscommon in 1994. He could hit them all day!

Ah yeah, not suggesting that hillman. Just replying to the suggestions that Darcy never really played well for Dublin. Cosgrove had to take the free. He was very unlucky. He was certainly a better more consistent free taker than Mossy Quinn, as was Darcy. There's a lot of things different about Dublin under Gilroy and Gavin but it's maybe forgotten a bit how poor Dublin were from frees in the noughties before Bernard Brogan and Cluxton took over.

I remember Colin Corkery said about Ray Cosgrove's free that he almost he it too well. He had a great year. Did get some consolation with a club medal in 09.

That was a great Armagh team. Lost by a point to a great Galway in 2001, pipped by Fermanagh in 04 and Tyrone 05. Unlucky not to win another. Cross lads had more success and luck on the club scene. Favourite player to watch probably John McEntee, an almost lazy like style and could curl a great kickpass into McDonnell or Clarke or kick a long range monster when needed.

Darcy could kick frees from 45 metres. He beat the Rossies with a last minute pressure '45 in 1994 to beat them after the 5th attempt in 5 years. That kick gave us the belief to win Connacht that year after defeating our all time treacherous arch-enemies.
