What a way to make a first post.

How exactly did you even find this thread?

Cosgrove played a big part in 2006 at wing forward for Dublin with himself and Kevin Bonner both doing a job not unlike Paul Flynn now.
Mark Vaughan was hard done by pat gilroy himself and a certain Vincents player both had disciplinary problems and which resulted in them leaving the panel but only one of them was given q second chance. Vaughan then put on a lit of weight after that and now only comes in as a sub for Crokes.
Another up and coming Crokes man was mark davoren
He was very unlucky had brilliant league in 09 and was man if the match on his championship debut before doing his cruciate. A year later on his comeback in a challenge match four minutes on the pitch and he done the exact same injury and hasn't played since

Hill i was just thinking about him the other week. I remember the game he went off. He was having a great day and then it just went on him.

Amazing what can come of 'socialising' a little less. In my opinion Vaughen wasn't prepared to make the sacrifices and separate himself from people and things holding him back.

I will always remember that free kick Cosgrove missed and it is unfortunate because he had a great year.
I remember the positivity around the team that year because it was the first natural free taker that we had in years.

Cosgrave I felt was limited , but did have one of the best purple patches you could only dream of , we were so desperate for success anyone in flip flops was seen as the second coming thats how I sum Vaughan up , he defenitley had something but he was not the real deal .
Armagh not a great team IMO as they didnt put enough silverware on the mantlepiece , in their defence they were playing with two other heavyweights at the time in tyrone and Kerry , fair to say Armagh had some great players .

Razor...

I remember him coming on as a Sub against Cross in the All Ireland final and scoring the last point of the game to help win the All Ireland

Great to see him putting his ghosts to one side like that

A great moment for him... I remember standing up and letting out an especially loud "GO ON RAZOR"

I remember him, he exploded onto the scene and really looked like he could be a superstar. Such a shame.

I agree that Armagh probably did not get the silverware their talent might have achieved at another time. They were just unlucky that there were a few very strong teams about at the time and over a reasonably sustained period. Hopefully we see another peiod soon when there are 3 or 4 really strong contenders in any given year.

Ah 2002 - what a summer.

The Dubs came back into the big time after seven years in the wilderness!

I'll always remember Cosgrove for the Leinster Semi-Final v Meath.

Poor Darren Fay never laid a hand on him all day.

I always remember that semi-final. Free was from a awkward angle, Declan Darcy had come on as a sub and was an excellent free taker always wondered why he didn't take that free

I would give my left arm to see that Armagh team play again. They were a great team to support. Its just a pity they didn't get 2nd all- Ireland. They should have done it in 2005.

They wouldn't have been far off it in 06 either. That qtr final was some game which could have gone either way.
It gave Kerry that extra kick to see out September.
They're one of the few teams that the 'you need to win a second to be considered a great team' doesn't apply to.

Dont believe in blowing smoke up the proverbial whole , Armagh were the third best team of a particular decade , they won an All Ireland , could/should have won a second ? But there were still better teams out there so not a great , well not by my personal definition , now I totally get a person from Armagh calling them great , when starved of success and you get such a high quality bunch of players who deliver some great days sure why wouldn't you think they were great ,
Some of my personal favourite Dublin players won sweet fanny adams , certainly couldn't be called great , but I loved them and to hell with anyone else .
We had a superb team that just happened to share an era with Meath and no back door ,I think of Armagh similarly sharing Ulster with Tyrone , doesnt diminish their accomplishments .

Razor thrived on confidence and it deserted him after that miss. He also didn't take too kindly to the physical side of the game and was easily intimidated, partly because he lacked any physical presence. An awful shame because he took some phenomenal scores in that year.

Vaughan was a wasted talent. The work regime and discipline of an IC footballer was not for Mark as I can testify having bumped into him a couple times in Temple Bar following high profile games when he was at his peak.

Would agree with Joxer on Cosgrove and the physical stuff. Unfortunately the Lyons' media strategy at the time was to tell everyone how great you were. That put a serious bullseye on his chest and the when it went wrong for him the backlash was pretty severe. Was some summer for him though. Filled his pockets against Meath and Donegal. A real unique story to do that and fall off so abruptly.

As for that Armagh team. They changed the game more than a lot of teams than won more than them. That is their legacy. An unbelievable collection of strong characters. Their unprecedented success in Ulster should not be overlooked either.

That Armagh team was good but not a great team, they were blessed to beat Dublin in '02 semi and let's be honest here should have never beaten Kerry in that final they some how hung out for a win but anyone watching could see Kerry were the way better side , the next year they lost in the first round in Ulster and then get a really lucky draw to the final were they lost in a poor final to Tyrone , the next year Fermanagh knocked them out nough said , 05 was there peak were they were unlucky to lose to Tyrone and 06 was there last hurrah when a great Kerry team hammered them in the quarters. Yes a good team but not a great team
