Ray Cosgrove and that great Armagh team

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Was watching tg4 last night, the 2002 AI semi final. What happened to Ray after that year? What a year he had, wonder did he do a deal with the devil to have one great year. Also that great Armagh team. I know they won plenty of Ulsters but one All Ireland from such a great group of players, forgot how good they were. 1 to 15 household names, its a shame they didnt win more.

Me and the mates where on about Ray one day about a month ago! We where saying Dublin hadn't settled on a full-foward in a long time and they havn't had a steady free taker since Charlie Redmond!!

he really did hav a great year in 02 there is a fantastic picture in a pub in ardee of a goal he scored against meath taken from behind the goal at the hill end. i know its kinda goin off the topic but mark vaughan is another guy that had so much potential but disappeared totally from the public eye after the club ai.

Cosgrove was around the Dubs panel before but never made it on the big stage. He still plays Club football for Crokes but he never puts huge scores up for them. A one year wonder really the ball broke for him 9 times out of 10 in that championship except for the free hitting the post. Past his best at this stage but very good club footballer is all i would call him being honest. Regards Vaughan think he does have the talent just doesnt care really all about hinself and the team comes second.

I watched that the other night too and it was only then that i remember how good a footballer ciaran whelan was. Some of his scores were unreal and his feilding was first class too.

It is funny but I think that some players are utterly dependent on confidence to perform and if they lose it they never get it back. It could very well be that the free Cosgrove missed in that semi-final against Armagh to draw the match at the death had serious repercussions on his confidence.

I never thought that Vaughan quite as impressed as Cosgrove from play but he was a superb free-taker. However, I understand that he was tear-away who wasn't willing to sacrifice his social pleasures for the military self-discipline required by the modern game and was largely let go because of it. A pity because had definitely had something, a cheek and a spark that is refreshing to see. I reckon that Vaughan could have been a great player in the 80s.

It is amazing to think that over the past 10 years since 2002 Dublin have come within 1 point on three occassions (2002, 2006, 2010) of being in the final and within 2 points in 2007!

i remember vaughan alright. he kicked great frees agin us in the leinster club. scored a great goal agin team from galway in mullingar too. think he could have been a good double act with BBrogan for dublin this year.IF he's fit mind you.
Maybe Vaughaners(!) is just taking a break?
is he still playing for crokes?

We must have a similar source.

He put the final nail in the coffin against Cross in the All Ireland Club final on Paddy's Day... and vanquished his ghosts

mark vaughan is a good free taker but poor from play not intercounty standered, fair play to ray he is still putting in very good performances for crokes at the moment very intelligent footballer

I remember him in 02 think he scored 6-26. However he will always be remembered for that miss against armagh. Thats probably the reason why he never regained that form. I remember in 03 Frankie Dolan scored 12 points in a game against offaly and then 13 point against kildare the next game. Some of the points he scored that day were unbelievable. However he missed some awful frees against Kerry in the QF and never recovered either and unlike cosgrove not even an all-star.

'Great' teams should win more than one All-Ireland.

The miss was somewhat of a defining point in his carrer alright.
Unfortunate for him after the year he had put in.
