The amount of blinkered rubbish on this thread is unreal. There is no doubt that the English played a significant role in saving Ireland from German occupation during the period after the Germans had defeated the French and had yet to invade Russia. They were then assisted by their allies following the entry of Russia and the US into the War. Without US and Russian help they would have been defeated. The point is that they were the only opposition to Hitlers Germany at that time. It is true to say that Hitler had hoped that he could form an alliance with the English because he viewed them as racially pure, and this contributed to Germany's failure to defeat England when they were at their weakest.

The posts from those who seem to want to argue over the British presence in the North is not related to this topic. Indeed I find it hard to believe that people can equate the nature of Nazi occupation with any other. The Nazi's did not view us as racially pure and have no doubt we would have been used as slave labour to feed the German army and people.

Viewing the posts of Dellboypolecat who was so disgusted at the behaviour of Louth supporters after the Leinster final with his arguments that the North was sold out by Collins and his posts on this thread are hard to balance. How can he be so disgusted by supporters going onto the field and remonstrating with a referee and at the same time criticise those who brought substantial peace to Ireland

Am I the victim of a wind-up?
Fact: Germany attempted to invade Britain and failed, in what is now known as the Battle of Britain. The main reason for failing was the invention of radar by the British which gave them a HUGE advantage over the Germans.
Fact: Hitler had a plan named Operation Green to invade Ireland after Britain was conquered.

Am I missing something here? Can any one give me proof that, in patrique's words, Hitler had no intention of invading Britain, let alone Ireland.

In 1938 Hitler took over Czechoslovakia and Britain and his friends in Britain stood by. So when he took over Poland he expected the same, but the friends in Britain could not stop Churchill who was rabble rousing. Britain declared war and sent an army to France.

this army was swept into the sea within a week, at Dunkirk. However Hitler still did not want war with Britain so he stood by while the army was evacuated from the beeches.

Still his friends in Britain did not deliver so his next step is to start the battle of Britain. As brave and valiant as the mostly POLISH RAF fighter pilots were, they had no chance if Germany was serious. Wars were won by those who can produce the most steel, so Germany simply had to blow up all the steel works. the RAF had about 4 planes left when Hitler mysteriously stopped bombing the air fields.

Germany conquered EUROPE in some 5 months, Britain were powerless to stop them, if Hitler had been serious. he was not. He wanted Russia. Bad mistake.

So while he had a plan to invade Britain and maybe Ireland, it was not seriously acted on. Churchill had a plan to invade Ireland but after Dunkirk the Irish probably would have won!!!!!!!

Alas the winners teach basic history in school, usually to show how great they were. You need to do research to nearly discover the truth.

Put it this way. In 50 years school kids will be taught that the USA and Britain invaded Iraq to save themselves from Saddam.

Anyone want to do a ten euro double on me and Saddam against Mayweather and the USA?

I didn't say the british army brought substantial peace to Ireland. I was referring to Dells previous posts on a different thread in which he said Michael Collins sold out. I just can't understand how a man who was so outraged at what happened after the leinster final can argue a point which if one draws to inevitable conclusions means that continued violence after the treaty and indeed to the present day is justified.

And lads, lets get real, more nationalists and irishmen were killed by the IRA than the British Army

You need to lose your bitterness and give credit where its due. The English did stand alone against Hitler for a part of WW2. Thats not to justify everything they have ever done on the world stage or here in Ireland. But you can't seriously compare the awfulness of Bloody Sunday with anything the Nazi's did.

Truth is I don't even think Dell knows who the Nazi's were, according to his blinkered view of history the British were responsible for everything from the Aids pandemic to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Thank goodness for that crystal ball, sure the brits knew there would be millions of Jews / ethnic minorities systematically killed from 1942 (especially 1944 onwards) when they declared war in 1939…….

Britain declared war to protect her empire, that is why they lost WWII when the end result is strategically analyzed. The US and Russia won WWII, with most of the fighting done on the eastern front, Hollywood did not see fit to make movies about this though, which explains why some people our of the opinion the British defeated Nazism.
