758576 Any rivalry or dislike should have been put aside for the greater good. This wasn't just fighting with Britain, this was fighting with all the Allied countries for what was just and right against one of the most serious threats freedom and democracy has ever faced. For Ireland to stand neutral will go down in our nation's history as one of it's most shameful and cowardly chapters
-------------------------------------
Does this cowardly and shameful chapter in history also include Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey and Switzerland, Europes other neutral nations, or are they exempt because Britain wasn't their neighbour and therefore they werent under any obligation to fight?

Spain and Portugal I believe were dictatorships (Spain in fact may have leaned towards Germany if anything) and their position was to be expected. But of course, any country in Europe that remained neutral during World War 2 and was happy to have foreigners die for their freedom while itself remaining neutral deserves disdain for its sheer cowardice. Ireland benefited enormously from an Allied victory in WW2 and yet contributed very little towards it. Like I said, truly shameful

Some of you people calling the Irish cowards for not helping Britain should be ashamed of yourselves. You're pathetic, a disgrace to the nation, and to the name Irishman. We helped them in WW1 didnt we, and what did we get? The black and tans roaming the country, murdering civilians, burning homes and towns. Surely we had a right to remain neutral after the way we were treated.

i personally believe the nazis needed stopping their crimes against humanity were terrible and disgusting , they were many brave men and women who stood against this evil axis the beaches of normandy to sciliy and market garden ardennes , and places like iwo jima , okinawa , the lives of these people who gave their lives for the freedom of europe , and their sacrifices to stop the persacution of millions of innocent civilians , their steadfast determination and courage , who stood against hitler and his nazis thugs will not go unoticed , they were many irish people who fought in both wars many irish people were involved in the battle of britian were england were close to defeat , only for pilots that kept the germans at bay , many americans who of irish descent fought in their thousands all across europe and the pacific for the allies cause .

but if u think ireland as a nation were been unfair for taking the nuetrality route , then it is u who are been unfair , ireland as a nation had gone through enough largly because of its neighbours actions against our people .

'Some of you people calling the Irish cowards for not helping Britain should be ashamed of yourselves.'

That post sums it up better than I ever could. To some people it would be fighting for Britain's interests, not Ireland's or Europe's. Either the anti-Britishness is so great it blinds people to the obvious truth about WW2 or it simply is a new generation of cowardly Irishmen

Pomeroy,

At the time of W.W. 2 all the Irish knew about it was from British radio station bulletins. These were as much about propaganda as the German stations. Irishmen had a clear and just view of all things British as being of little benefit to them as history had taught them that. Hindsight is a great thing !! Some of you comments are as biased as i have ever seen here. The Irish did not trust Britain and her propaganda and had legitimate reasons i.e. 800 years of abuse from them !! The war in Europe was told to them through the British media and at that time very few even had a radio in their homes. Did you expect them to believe what they were being told on British radio ?

No one country won the war for the allies, it was a joint effort by several countries. Ireland did not fight along with them.

Nazis were geared up to invade Ireland? So were the Brits. Tried to post this previously but was not allowed through for some reason.

My Grandfather was in the Free State army during 'the emergency', he often told me a story of a day when they were all rushed from the barracks to the coast as they had received intelligence that the British army were going to invade in attempt to seize the treaty ports. Thankfully as it turned out, it did not happen and they were stood down.

I think it shows that neither Germany nor England respected her right to remain neutral.
