Kilkennys one code approach is disgraceful.

I found it intresting to see that Kilkenny won 3 Leinster Football titles when I done a small bit of research. All be it that they where about 100 years ago. Around the same time Kerry won a Hurling title. I don't see anyone having a go at Wicklow who have won neither. (not intending to have a go at Wicklow).

population wise , Kilkenny is a small county and don't have the players to excel in both codes, unlike Cork and Galway who have lot's of players

Look there are valid reasons for it silly reasons for it but the bottom line is if Cavan, Leitrim, London, New York etc etc etc can enter a team in both codes in the championship then surely to god Kilkenny can.

Its not a begrudging thing either cos KK are so successful. Cavan and other counties are fairly regularly slated on here for not doing enough for hurling, despite doing more for it than KK do for football. Its that simple. Even if they did enter a team in the football championship that got whalloped every year, at very least it would address the problem of people trying to undermine their hurling success. But they don't do this, and the fact is they have a unique status in the GAA that will only encourage resentment in some.

People are trying to make out that people want hurleys taken off kids. Just field a football team, sure the game easy by all accounts.

I got slated here a while back when I suggested their funding be cut if they are not prepared to put an effort into all sports. If clubs dont provide all sports their funding is not a much as clubs who do provide an outlet for all in other counties. So why have they been allowed away with this for so long. Disgraceful actions this year whereby they were allowed to pull their non prepared minor footballers from the Leinster back door competition. See if any other county would get away with this

I think there are many reasons why KK should stick with just hurling. We need a strong hurling county to be competing every year, if they divide their resources between the two it will affect their ability to compete with the other strong hurling counties. Now the population can't be an issue as if it were then Dublin Antrim and down should be lording the roll of honor.
Its KK choice to forget about football and to be honest its their loss, I love watching and playing both codes and its great to be competing at the top end of both each year. Leave KK off, they need every advantage they can get.

I was having a few pints after the game yesterday and was sitting next to a table of Kilkenny folk. And guess what they were talking about? A club football match next weekend I think involving James Stephens! Perhaps they have seen the light ;-)

i agree they must start putting the efford into football but to be fair its the peoples fault if they wer good at football and bad at hurling iam sure they would be all goin around with footballs in kk but yes something needs to be done down there about football

I take it back, there is plenty of football in Kilkenny. Did you see that lovely finish for their second goal in the Minor yesterday?

Kilkenny are the only county not to have an All Ireland Scor title.

thanks for that booboo. anyway I have one point: KK should be trawling Dublin and other counties for players eligible to play for them... it's the least they could do. There's no reason why they can't be competitive in both codes look at Offaly, pound for pound probably the best of the lot across both codes and they don't mind having a couple of Dubs :)

So many counties play football at a high level and so few play hurling...
I think it would be bad over all to force kilkenny into diluting their talent with football.
Ulster counties should be questioned in their scandalous neglect of hurling.

I have done a bit of research on the number of people/clubs playing football in Kilkenny. According to one unofficial source, there are 2 exclusive football clubs in Kilkenny (Railyard and Muckalee), 10 exclusive hurling clubs, and a whopping 28 registered dual clubs in the county. Now I know they only play their football competitions during the winter, but still theres a total of 30 clubs registered to promote football at club level in Kilkenny.
When you consider that theres only 22 football clubs in Sligo, and something like 28 in Roscommon, you begin to see how much football is neglected by Kilkenny County Board. Surely out of them 30 kilkenny clubs, there is one big athlete from each club who is useless at hurling and who would like to play intercounty football. Its not all that hard to gather a team to be competetive in Division 4 of the NFL.
Now my next problem with Kilkenny.. Accounts came out this week in the papers noting the cost of each of the county boards. Kilkenny spent Eur400,000 on their intercounty teams last year in total, even though they were in the shake-up in all hurling competitions. Tipperary spent over Eur1,000,000 on their intercounty teams, which is more than double Kilkenny. Kilkenny are at a distinct advantage here, as their board only have to raise and administer half of what Tipperary do. When one considers that Mayo spent about Eur100,000 on preparing their hurling teams each year, surely Kilkenny should be spending the same amount on their weaker code. The fact of the matter is that Kilkenny are giving themselves a distinct advantage as a county board, by taking the easy option and pulling out of the football championship each year.... You dont see Leitrim, Cavan or Longford pulling out of the Lory Meagher Cup each year to save money for their football sides, so why are Kilkenny aloud to get away with it....

highking- Mayo should probably spend the whole budget on hurling! They'd have a better chance of winning an AI. :=)
