Best ever hurling teams

very true Slayer I was just commenting on Banner boy saying that the Clare team of the 90s were more skillful than anyone else thats all and what Tipp did to them in 93 contradicts that theory fairly comprehensively

1. Kilkenny 2002-2010 (I feel that as most of the current team were in the 2002 squad it makes sense go that far back
2. Tipperary 1961-1965
3. Cork 1976-1978
4. Cork 1941-1944
5. Kilkenny 1972-1975
6. Wexford 1955-1960
7. Galway 1985-1990

good post a lot of teams fluke results! Yes Tipp gfluked a goal in 1991 and Kilkenny fluked the all ireland last year so thats quits
Also your numbers are good but Id put no.1 and no.2 in reverse order. As your no.2 are the greatest hurling team in living memory!

by the way Slayer
Clare beat Tipp by a single point in the 1997 all ireland final not 2 points just for the record

762997 The Clare team in the nineties were probably the 3rd best side of that decade.

They did have a few "greats" as in McMahon and for a very short period Jamsie, but they did rely a lot on fitness and determination as well.

An incredibly narrow-minded assessment. You're just going along with the lazy media-driven nonsense rife throughout the last few years.

The last media stuff I read on hurling was in the 1970s.

That Clare team surfaced in my memory in 1994 V Antrim in the league quarter final.

Antrim were FAVOURITES to win.

Enough said.

banner_boy:

I've given my view on this.... granted you don't agree but that no reason to call people narrow-minded.

My mother has a saying she always preaches...."Sometimes when you think all around you are wrong, it could be you that's wrong"

People are entitled to their view boss, and most have constructed their view and backed them up.....

If they win, it will not just be 5 in a row, but 7 in 9 years.

752013 Wheither Kilkenny win this years All Ireland or not, they will be remembered as the greatest team of all time by a distance. But who do people rank as the best teams they have seen (you must have seen them). My choices are
Intercounty
1 Current Kilkenny team (by such a distance it's not even a debate)
2 Cork late seventies (some of the most natural hurlers ever)
3 Galway 85-90. Maybe I'm biased but feel this team never got the credit it deserved
4 Offally mid Ninties (for some reason never got the hype Clare got but were a better team)
5 Clare mid Ninties (started the current intensity in hurling)
Other teams I considered, Cork Mid 00's but think off field activities ruled the out and kilkenny early 70's but I was very young when watching them so can't judge properly. Also I'm sure if I'd seen the Cork team of the 50's or the Tipp team of 60's the'd be in the list.
Club teams
1 Birr, record speaks for itself
2 Current Portumna team. Their domolition of Ballyhale in Thurles two years ago was most complete club team display I've seen. Also would have been very close in last years AI apart from 1 error
3 Ballyhale current. Dominating KK hurling when the county is so strong speaks for itself
4 Athenry, mid 90's
5 Sarsfields (Galway) must surely be the club with the smallest resources to win AI and did it back to back

The Tipp team of the 60s that won 4 out of 5 way ahead of the Kilkenny team by a mile.

No comparison, beating Kilkenny 14 points in Aall Ireland final in a rout in 1964.
Kilkenny will never do that to Tipp thats why there is no comparison between the two teams Tipp were a far superior power!

Thurles team of 50s and 60s greatest club team of all time
won 10 out of 11 county finals and won the football county final in between.

They were in the same era as the greatest ever senior hurling intercounty team of all time to play the game.
the magnificent Tipp team of the 1960s

Thiis tipp team could become a great team. Very talented players with the Mcgraths and Mahers. Think they could beat anyone on their day but overconfidence could be a big problem but i'm sure Ryan and Dunne will keep them grounded. Roll on 2011!
