I am beginning to worry whether after years of following my own county if i will ever see them lift Sam. I'm not getting any younger and they are not getting any nearer. Each year without any improvement gets harder to take and my prayers are not being answered !!

Brolly
County: Monaghan

Jesas! There ya go - wonder why i was never told about that one!ha Gud to know we got there once though...

Brolly,

Did ya know that Monaghan beat Cavan by 7 points in the 1930 Ulster Senior Football Championship Final.

Monaghan 4-3 - 1-5 Cavan.

I'd hate to think what Kerry would have done to Cavan seeing that Monaghan had clobbered them.

that's right after you slagged off the quinns workers you're fair game

funny how you were ignorant of the fact that Monaghan had played in an all ireland final and suddenly you are aware of the ulster championship that year

anyway I'm sure you will be pleased to find our that cavan put your defeat to right a few years later

funny how you accuse cavan people of living in the past and yet you boast of a tiddly little win in the ulster championship in 1930

Good topic this
In my view I agree with your view - I feel that suffering comes down to not acheiving what you feel you can acheive.
That rules out the kilkennys etc . because no one feels the can achieve (football)
There are counties with proud history Cavan or Offaly for e.g that have won sam before but lets be honest at the start of the 2011 championship do any of their fans expect to win Sam. (no I presume) - so to me suffering is relevant to expectation.

So in my lifetime when the 2011 Football champioship kicks offf which counties actually think they have any chance of winning Sam

Galway, Mayo, Kildare, Meath, Dublin, Cork, Kerry, Donegal, Down, Derry, Tyrone, Armagh

Lets face it Limerick, Fermanagh, Monaghon, Wexford have all had their days in the sun - but did anyone feel the could win it - I think not
so that brings us back to Mayo and Kildare that have not won sam in my lifetime- Mayo have had the most oppurtunities and haven't sealed the deal

So in my opinion and in my lifetime Mayo are the biggest sufferes -

I believe there's 11 or 12 counties that have never won a senior championship in either code.

Daith - i wouldnt say mayo are humiliated every year. mayo have only been hammered by kerry in the last 15 years. everytime we loose, even by 2 or 3 points, its considered a hammering for some reason.

The only reason we've suffered is because we've almost made it. We didn't suffer much in the 70's, 80's or the first half of the 90's because we had no expectations at all. We've had a couple of bad days out against Kerry in that time (both in finals), but we've met The Kingdom on several other occasions during the last decade and half and it's always been much closer, apart from '96 when we beat them comfortably enough in the semi. If you want to find the county with the worst rate of conversion of brilliant underage talent into success at senior, it isn't Mayo (though we're not great obviously)... that distinction has to go to our near neighbours, the Galway hurlers. They have a conveyor belt that seems to go over a cliff!

By the way Daith, I've spoken to them and you've no friends in Mayo anymore!

Definitely poor Fermanagh who have never won the National League, the Anglo Celt cup or the Sam Maguire.

Pericles now that you mention it I have had trouble contacting my Mayo mates since yesterday's post. Maybe it's the apalling standard of the mobile phone coverage in Connaught?

Daith, after spelling the name of our province like the London Mayfair hotel it's fair to say you might be running out of any friends on the western side of the Shannon (you may still have one or two in Clare if you don't find a way of offending them too!). You might be better not to reply for a while... until this tendancy of yours passes! I hope Mc'Geeney and his men go all the way for ye this year... no reason they can't.

Tipperary hurlers have contested ONE all ireland since 2001...Now they think that just because they ran Kilkenny close last year that they will beat them this year..We all know what happens when you get cocky with Kilkenny............They come out and DESTROY YOU AND THEY SHUT YOU UP VERY QUICKLY...

Cork football. We haven't won the All Ireland in twenty years, have lost 4 finals since then, been beaten by Kerry in Croke Park 6 times in 8 years. For a County our size 3 All Ireland's since 1945 is pathetic. We've been suffering for a long time, especially at the hands of Kerry. Hopefully we'll win it this year.

I know we had a good year this year with u-21s and seniors, but we suffer a lot in our county! However days like the 18th of July make the bad days irrelevant!
