Longest suffering fans

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Not being arrogant ochonlir and I don't doubt for a second the love and passion for the game in the less successful Counties. I'm just being realistic and pragmatic. In another code I am a big fan of Glasgow Celtic. If Celtic lose out on the SPL title I feel gutted because I always have high expectations of winning it, if we don't win the Champions League I don't spend any sleepless nights over it because I never expected to win it in the first place.

Agree with Slayers points but the fact still remains that we havent won the All Ireland since 1973 and being so close so many times is greater suffering than never being there atal.

You couldnt say Limerick hurling supporters are long suffering because about 95% of them have only been supporting them for 10 years.

All in all, i would say Limerick hurling fans are the most long suffering (But i couldnt be any more biased)

745153 The hurling fans of Galway and Dublin. No contest! I had thought I was bad until met Galway chap in his 50s or 60s crying his eyes out in toilet in Thurles last year after the Waterford game!

he was in the toilet again this year after the tipp game ha!

Subtract about 30 years and it was probably me. And after the Cork game the year before that....and at....and at......

I sympathise abhainn. It is far worse for yourselves (than us hurling Dubs) of course because your disappointments invariably happen in quarter finals, semi finals and finals whereas our disasters generally take place out of the public glare! Galway club mate of mine texted me after the Tipp match to say he thought he had lost the will to live! But look at it this way, the good days will be even better when they do come. When we beat you four years ago in the league the Galway players must have thought we were all mad as hundreds of people invaded the pitch at the final whistle. Doesn't take much to please us ;-)

I was devastated after the final in 98, myself and my father hugged each other in grief when the final whistle blew, nearest thing I can compare it to is the dread feeling in your soul that you get after hearing that a loved one or family member has passed away but the difference being you have the next year to look forward to and hope builds again.

What about Wicklow & Fermanagh? No Provincial title at all.
At least Limerick footballers won one in 1896 although I do agree it's time to stop basking in that glory...

Cavan. 39 Ulster titles, 5 All-Irelands, and they've done nothing of note (apart from Ulster in 97) since I've been on this planet. Its hard for young people to believe that we used to actually produce awesome teams.

you're right hurlingdub - the only good thing about losing a lot is that when (if!!) you finally do win nothing matches it. This years loss was the toughest to take, but then I say that every year!

You's all have Something to cling on to, we in Wicklow have noting, Micko gave us a little hope but we were never going to win anything of any mention. Its Year after Year of torment, minors U21 and senior's all no were near making any kind of a break through so please don't feel sorry for yourselves in all other 31(excluding NY and Lon) counties and spare a thought for Wicklow.

P.S We do have the most beautiful county in Ireland which does cheer us up (a little).

your logic dosen't translate from one sport to another. Following different sports is broadly similar in terms of the rush you get when a goal is scored etc but the sense of involvement and identity that people feel about their counties is not comparable to other codes, also logic dosen't apply to us supporters otherwise we could flip a coin every year. You or I don't really know how a Leitrim man feels about a Leitrim win or loss or what his expectation is. your expectation of Leitrim will be very different from that of a native.

But it's all part of the madness that makes a poster from cavan argue with a poster from Cork about the expectations of a Leitrim Gaa fan. The madder the better!

No. The rest are blow-ins mainly from Kerry and Dublin.

ochonlir My logic does not alone transfer from sport to sport but it transfers into everyday life. In any walk of life the bigger the expectation the bigger the disappointment. ITS PURE COMMONSENSE.

That a poor attitude ......there's always someone worse off than yourselves and as long as that's the case you won't get any better! jaysus is that what we're doing as well ??

I went out with a beautiful Leitrim girl for years, and she looked forward to the summer just like I did, even though she knew hers was going to be shorter. For her family, parents, community etc, 1994 was everything, and probably more than I can imagine. She never did go to a Galway game with me though....
