Underage Training Drills

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I take an under 12/14 hurling team in my local area and I was wondering if any of you had any good drills or games that I can incorporate into the training session.

I good drill for match situations...
4 players in each group....2 in the middle, the other at either sideline(each player on sideline has sliothar). 2 players in the middle recieve ball from sideline and then return it. Players in the middle then switch and recieve off opposite sideline. Repeat this for a specific time limit. men in middle then change with men on sidelines.
Note: Must be done at pace.

P.S: I described it horribly.

There are loads of coaching materials available from the Ulster Council. Check out their website for details or ask your club coaching officer.

Look up youtube, some good stuff on there. Most important thing at that level is catching, first touch, blocking, hooking and teaching them to take their step and not just throw it up when surrounded by players.

My manager had a good drill. Made a fair big hole with it, he did.

Maybe you should not be coaching them when you need to asked others for drills.

One player on either sideline and one in the middle standing between two cones about fifteen yards apart. Player on one sideline hits the ball to the nearest cone player in the middle returns it. The player on the other sideline hits the ball to the other cone as soon as the player in the middle has turned. Carry on like that and must be done at pace.

P.S. That was described terribly.

I have read some absolute **** from you on these forum but that one takes the absolute biscuit. I have plenty of drills that I use but is there any harm in seeing what drills others use and find works well? Maybe you shouldn't be a referee because in my opinion you are the most biased person on this discussion board.

A good coach should know every drill under the sun to be fair ....

lol he is training under 12/14. As someone else said the biggest thing at the age is the basics. Passing, running at speed and most annoying thing iv found with young people is they just run after ball. try teach them to get and stay in positions (i failed at that part).

Obviosuly at that age they dont need fitness training and fixed nutritional diet but that would be awful funny to so loads of bulked up 12 year olds battering the other team - the visualizations in my head are crazy

Are you actually being serious? Senior and Minor Coaches in Derry go to coaching session with guest appearances from Inter-county Coaches to give advice on drills to use and things. How can a coach who has only really began coaching a few months ago in an amateur sport know every drill under the sun? What if an under 12 coach from the back end of nowhere in Kerry made up a drill last week, am I supposed to know that as well?

Its people like you that drive men away from coaching under-age teams.

Ah you see because i see poeple trying to coach and have not got a notion and that is why they should not coach if they do not know the drills..

Dellboypolecat, you have now comfirmed my suspicions about you. It must be such a burden to you to know absolutely everything there is to know about GAA and the world in general.

This guy is coming on and trying to pick up and improve drills for his team. The fact that he wants to learn from others who may have more experience is to be commended. Thats how all us coaches do things. We speak to other coaches and managers and continually strive to make our coaching methods better thus making better players for the future.
Well done fella and keep up the good work. Hurling all around the country needs more people like you.

For what its worth as was mentioned earlier, have a look on youtube for drills. The Games Development website which has some good tips too.

You generally give dell a lot of abuse, he gives you some of your own medicine and now your knickers are all in a twist. Man up!

Sure I'll leave the Under 12s and Under 14s without a manager then. Nobody else wanted the job, I stepped in to help the lads out, your probably one of those people who eff and blind at the team managers but when it comes down to it you wouldn't get up at 9 on a Sunday Morning or at 6 on a Tuesday evening straight after work but have the gall to criticise those who do.

You likely only referee because your getting paid for it.
