If there was a procedure where people were allowed onto the pitch in an orderly fashion after the final would they be in any more danger than they are now when exiting the stadium on their way home ? Now i am against going onto the pitch at all but i cannot see a situation where, say if the Dubs win, people will not climb fences or push past stewards, gardai etc and encroach on the pitch as the euphoria of the occasion will take over !! The G.A.A. must get this right !! Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 10/08/2010 11:41:24 741645 Link 0 |
Surely there has to be some kind of access to the pitch in the case of fire ie gates.....so if there is a danger of people getting crushed they'll have to open gates dammon (Meath) - Posts: 1291 - 10/08/2010 13:21:11 741814 Link 0 |
it seems this is going to be installed before the finals this year. and to be honest ive a bad feeling about this one. we all know the GAA treat croker different to the rest of their grounds but a fence is a bad idea. a fence is there to be climbed and if some-one was to impailed on it i can only imagine the furore. there's also a lot of potential against the grain results this year coupled with possible historic wins. kilk winning 5 in-a-row, tipp stopping them, waterford, kildare on a long awaited win, dubs winning first all ireland in new croker. there's a lot of potential hysteria there that could spill onto the pitch. the GAA have also said that most invasions occur from the hill, hence the fence. this maybe true, but what happens if the security lines are broken some-where else? there could be crushing on the hill with people trying to get down at the side of the hogan and cusack. i think a glass screen would be better, at least its transparent and un-climbable (in theory anyway), but boxing in the hill with a fence is a bad call in my book. if people know the fence will have gates to avoid crushes they will climb it to get the gates open, at least with a glass shield (like ice-hockey and i think the san siro has one???) people will know before hand its un-passable. seany16 (Dublin) - Posts: 1663 - 10/08/2010 15:46:33 742143 Link 0 |

Many years ago they used to have a deep moat all around the pitch. It was filled with crocodiles which were never fed. The story goes that a Fermanagh man fell into it while trying to cross. He is reputed to have eaten six crocodiles before he was pulled out !! Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 10/08/2010 15:54:07 742171 Link 0 |

I haven't bothered reading through this entire thread as there are too many posts to be honest on this topic, but I think it is awful that for a sport where no crowd segregation is necessary, that we could potentially end up with a 9 foot high barrier the whole way around the stadium. Never mind the fact that this will look dreadful, it will also send out a very bad message to people outside Ireland looking at our games, who will obviously think we have major issues with crowd control. Even English football grounds where there is always a potential for crowd trouble do not have barriers around the stadium, the only way to sort this out for once and for all is to bring in legislation making it an offence to go on to the pitch. gilly0512 (Galway) - Posts: 1176 - 10/08/2010 16:13:23 742235 Link 0 |
I heard that it is only be erected during Dublin games!! Down Exile (Down) - Posts: 214 - 10/08/2010 17:12:05 742385 Link 0 |
it would be stupit to erect a fence and also very dangerous and would cause loss of life if for example dublin or a new county won Sam or Mc. cups. THe only fans that wont invade the pitch are maybe Kerry or Kilkenny, all other counties are going into the field when they win and a fence wont keep them out but will result in the loss of life. dont say you were never told - like some politicians culmore (None) - Posts: 1398 - 10/08/2010 19:43:04 742637 Link 0 |

Madness. Hillsborough folks as we all know happened because of fencing. Everywhere else has demolished terracing and taken down fencing. Hill 16 needs to be demolished. Thats what should be done if the GAA want to be seen to be semi conscious no place for a terrace in 21st Century sport, its risky, it causes crushing, fencing makes crushing inevitable and this can lead to disaster as in Hillsborough when 95 died. Do we really want the risk of that happening in Ireland? Madness lukekehoe (Dublin) - Posts: 2 - 10/08/2010 21:16:08 742745 Link 0 |

Culmore where are you coming from?do you seriously think that ikk do 5 in a row,if Tipp or Waterford win the AI that the fans of any of the 3 wont want to go out on the field? I will predict what will happen, the fans in the stands will get out on the field and then you will have a crush on the hill, its madness to fence the hill,I am not saying its right that fans should go on the pitch but its awful hard not to,I was so excited in 67 that I climbed the fence at the canal end,it was a high fencewith barbed wire if I remember correctly, just imagine the excitement of the fans of the 3 remaining counties in the hurling alone, for their own reasns,it doesnt bear thinking about mooncat (Kilkenny) - Posts: 538 - 10/08/2010 21:49:03 742775 Link 0 |

If Dublin were to win the All Ireland then people on the Hill would be more pleased to see the team coming down to them rather than getting onto the pitch, and of course that would only be possible if there are not that many supporters on the pitch already. The idea that thousands of people are going to storm a large barrier is ludicrous. It never happened when the fence was there in years gone by and it won't happen now, no matter what county wins the All Irelands. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 11/08/2010 08:53:47 742816 Link 0 |
