United Ireland? Yes or No

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Well hurlinspuds I'm getting the results as being approximately 32 for a United Ireland and 6 against.Poetry in those figures for sure! Some people joined the debate but didn't give an opinion and others were simply too ambivalent to be put in to either bracket. If anybody else wants to go through the threads and double check,be my guest.I think there's life in this thread yet and others will weigh in.

BadMonkey says-'The difference is that terrorists target civilians, soldiers do not'. This is one of the most stupid statements I have ever read in my entire life pertaining to any matter, bar none.

Seanie, I also quoted that sentence from badmonkey. Anyone who thinks the british army never targetted civilians or helped others who were killing civilians obviously has no business giving such strong opinions on here. Ridiculous stuff.

I also have a problem with saying that you hold the old ira and new ira (whatever those terms really mean) in the same esteem. How can anyone equate a fight for independence in 1920 with the thugs there now. It's like saying the car bomb in derry last week was by the united irishmen!!

I always think with the conflict in the North that you can equate the old IRA and the Provos, but only for a short period at the beginning of the 70's. They were idealistic, cornered, and very much oppressed, both politically and phyically. The demand for a defence organisation was strong and I think just. However, they wavered from those lines after a few years, and, as you say, became thugs.

Hurlispuds,I noticed a Dublin poster said never to the united Ireland request but finished by saying take Cork too and make it 7 counties! I think he was getting worked up over your upcoming football semi-final.Sure god love him,the crater!

Seanie, people tend to forget that cork is already an independent Peoples republic ;-)

Dubs are usually good banter but they've something against cork people. I don't like when they say "ah you're from down the country" as well because to them down the country could mean derry or it could be killarney!!

abhainn, as I've already said on this thread, I don't like to have strong opinions on the troubles but my belief is that when a community is being burned out of their homes and persecuted like the catholics in the late 60s and early 70s then protecting yourself with force is understandable and even admirable. I think the brits played into the hands of the extremists in their reaction and the fact that the security forces had a free reign. How many lads joined the IRA in the immediate aftermath of bloody sunday?? the hunger strikes?? etc etc. That's why I'm so annoyed by the likes of bad monkey saying that the british army were not terrorists or did not target civilians. They've been proved to have done and not just in ireland.
It took terrible bombings like omagh and enniskillen to undo the damage done by the british army and their collusion and make people realise that violence was not beneficial.

seanie, you've done it now. Saying west brits is a big no no to many people. Having said that though, I slag all my dublin friends about being from the pale. When we're heading down the motorway an hour outside dublin i say welcome to ireland lads...

What would make it really cheaper would be if all the West Brits left the country and went to their motherland across the Irish Sea.

Plenty of west brits alright. South Dublin is full of them, Northern Ireland may as well be as far away as South Africa to them.

Was the West Brits comment actually directed at myself or was there two distinct points to your post? My post was a joke in case you didn't realise.

The whole West Brit thing stems from what some people believe about what it is to be Irish. Some people take an extremely narrow minded view about what 'Irishness' is and thus we get people referring to other Irish people as 'West Brits'. Same with people claiming that any people from the six are less Irish.

People can be very narrow minded about what they think being Irish is.

I wouldnt be one bit surprised for him to say this. Typical of his pro-brit stance.
