I completely agree with Omar.d. And i would even agree with him taking the mick out of Dell because Dell if you believe what you are writing you're living in dreamland. Obviously we would all love to see a United Ireland but at what cost. It will take alot of patience if any of us are to see a United Ireland. Plus alot of money.

A united Ireland was decided on circa 1983 and the entire peace process has been aimed in that direction.

The main stumbling blocks at the minute are Sin Fein's vote in the south, and a reluctance by southerners to possibly have to pay more.

My own vote?

NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(unless we can have a 31 county Ireland excluding Ty..........)

The British Government and most of the people on the big islands of Britain would drop Northern Ireland into the Republic's lap without a second thought. Northern Ireland means nothing to most Brits but strife and bombs and a money-sink. Northern Ireland has nothing of interest for Britain. Its got a busted economy (despite huge handouts) and a crap workforce, only so-so scenery with a few interesting bits like the Giant's Causeway. Not much else really. Its culture is divisive and fixated on religious hatred and a mythological history.

So the British Government and the majority of the British people want shot of the place, but they can't dump it for free on the Republic - why not?

1 Because consistently, the majority protestant, loyalist population of Northern Ireland vote to stay British - that's democracy and its no different than the case of Gibraltar.

2 The Republic doesn't want the Northern counties - they're populated with the wrong kind of people and they don't have anything to offer economically or culturally.

So everybody plays the same old game - the romantic farce of a united Ireland. But when it comes down to it, there's only a few idealistic nutters that really want it to happen. Everybody else just takes advantage - especially the organised criminals for which the Northern Ireland paramilitary organisations are merely fronts.

Omar.d I specifically did not ask for free debate,I requested a yes or no reply to avoid the rhetoric coming from the likes of yourself. The intent of the thread being to gauge the feelings of people on the "IDEA" of a united Ireland, not the feelings of people on the practicalities and consequences of bringing it about. My political allegiances are,to be honest, wavering of late, but I am an unwavering republican in this regard and I put much stock in the old adage,"better the devil you know than the devil you don't".In saying all that I am open to persuasion and will give my support according to whom I think can do the best job for all people. The thread is wide open now anyway so thanks for your contribution, the next time I want your opinion though,I will give it to you.Excuse me,I will tell you what it is.Ah hem, sorry,I will ask you for it.

Artisan-a federal europe is a disastrous idea that I hope will never get to come about.Oddly enough I admire the British resistance to european expansionism.
