723579 Dell, Everyone else responded to the thread with an honest manner - right on message for all three pages as I read.....but not you...no, not you, you could not respond in an honest manner.....! My favourites would be Mick O'Connell, Jack O'Shea, Peter Canavan and so many more.... there are many legends and not all remembered.!

Jimmy Doyle.
6 AI's, 9 Munster Titles , 3 All Stars, made Team of The Millennium in 1999............and at over the ago of 70, he was one of the last to leave the terrace behind the goal in Port Laoise when Tipp played Offaly two weeks ago. Skillful, humble and a gent.

I really do get surprised when I see Anthony Tohill mentioned in these discussions so much. Yes, he was a good player but John McDermott was clearly the best midfielder in the 1990's, and by some distance. I rally do like to detach myself from bias so I tend to steer clear of backing Meath players in these topocs whenever I can but I'm really baffled at the constant presence of Tohill in GAA Heroes in these arguements. McDermott was in the twilight of his career in the National League final in 2000 and he really roasted Tohill, and it's the only time I can think of ther 2 meeting each other in a big game, as Derry only came out f Ulster once in the 1990s while Meath were usually at the business end of the championship. And that's only choosing the best from Tohill's own era, there were plenty of berrer midfielders before and after him aswell, never mind Mcdermott being better in that era itself (O'Shea, O'Se, Cavanagh etc.). On the subject of bias, I think that for these topics yu shouldn't be allowed to vote for someone from your own county (or province if you're from Ulster). My own tuppence worth is Sean Kavanagh.

I think you've missed the point? The question is who is your GAA hero not who is the best player/midfielder/umpire/whatever. John McDermott can be yours. Why should your GAA hero be from outside your own county?

another hero for me is Jimmy Barry-Murphy..2 Hurling All-Irelands, 2 Football All-Irelands and 7 all stars.
Saying that, this thread has turned into who you think is your county's best player at the moment.

Breffni39 a GAA Hero will 99 times out of 100 be a player. It shall NEVER be an umpire. Mine isn't John McDermott, it's Sean Cavanagh as stated. I believe it should be someone from a county other than your own in the interest of unbiased opinion.

Yeah you missed the point. You are entitled to a biased opinion in this particular thread. Your GAA hero can even be someone in your own family. You selecting Sean Cavanagh could nearly be read as "there are no heroes in Meath GAA". Unless of course Sean Cavanagh is the GAA figure that has inspired you more than other, which is perfectly fine. However people can pick whoever they want as their GAA hero.
