An unhealthy obsession with all things Tyrone.

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I remember when Arsene Wenger was so obsessed with Chelsea's success that he couldn't resist sniping at them at every opportunity, Jose Mourino described him as a 'voyeur'. I feel that 'Tyrone voyeurs' have found a new home on these pages.

What do you all think is the reason for this obsession? I mean, I'm proud of my county and always have been even in the dark days when we couldn't get a championship win for years. I don't think however I harboured such deep resentment to my more illustrious neighbours, evny maybe but not the hatred I read here.

I think its unheathy not just for the individual but for the association as a whole.

I just think Tyrone are an easy target.

Ya, they were defensive in 2003 but they did what was needed to win. They went on to develop their game and they are always a good side to watch in action. It's too easy to throw that puke football term around.

In fairness you can substitute Tyrone for many other counties here but for different reasons. There is a need on HS to start stupid threads on Dublin constantly. You could say the same for Mayo and Kerry. I wouldn't get too upset by it.

All publicity is good publicity..... success brings attention.

Kilkenny footballers are probably very hard to look at for neutral spectators but no one gives out about them being boring, defensive, handpassing too much or anything like that !!!!!

Yeah, I would agree with Slayer also. The puke football tag was inaccurate but in the same way british football commentators make lazy assumptions about certain nation's supposed characteristics at a World Cup, GAA followers tend to make lazy assumptions about Northern football. When Tyrone and Armagh came along they challenged the old order of traditional success and did it in a way that upset the so-called purists which was defined by Spillane's puke football comment. By 2005/2006 I would have thought it was pretty clear that Tyrone were a lot more similar to Kerry than they were to Armagh when it came to playing styles but the same lazy analysis of painting all Ulster teams with the same brush has continued.

Like it or not at the moment all football teams play with 8 midfielders (3 HB, 2 MF, 3 HF) and get behind the ball when they lose posession. Posession is considered far more important than territiory so teams will pass the ball around more. If teams disposess the opposition because they have players back they will attempt to break forward with numbers. All teams do this, Tyrone just do it better than everyone. That Tyrone perfected this style first should not tarnish their legacy or be held against them. Ciaran whelan gave a frank assessment of Tyrone in his online column this week which i think sums this up perfectly:
"I still feel Tyrone have been the team of the decade. The thing about them is that everyone has figured out how they play, but no-one can combat it. I don't even know if it's possible"
Now I don't agree that they were the team of the decade but I do think to criticise them for their negativity is to miss the point completely and a very blinkered attitude.

Slayer I respect the points you make however I dont believe Tyrone were defensive atall in 2003, its a myth most people buy into unfortunately. I dont have the results to hand but Tyrone throughout the National League that year and the Championship averaged about 20 points a game. Roughly a score every 3 and a bit minutes.

The only two reasonably low scoring games they had were against Kerry in the semi and Armagh in the final. In the semi Tyrone played all the football in the first half but were repeatedly fouled each time they were close to creating goal chances. The second half was a cagey affair i admit. The final itself was very tense however again Tyrone played most of the attacking football. Mulligan, Cavanagh and Cavlan all missed decent goal chances which if taken would have given Tyrone a much larger margin of victory.

Maybe someone can publish Tyrone's results that year to prove my point? I believe Tyrone were easily the highest scoring team in Ireland that year, hardly a defensive team.

To be honest CRH it would be a lot worse if nobody was talking about us, sure just look at Derry!

There are some posters with genuine opinions on Tyrone and our football and, whilst they might not be fans, they actually back up their opinion with why. And then of course there are the lazy hallions who's analysis of a county's footballing prowess for an entire decade of success is usually summed up in one 4 letter word, puke. Its a shame really but there you have it.

Whats wrong with being defensive ? You still have to score more than the other team to win !! Every team has a defence and i wish mine was as defensive as Tyrone !!

C'mon you could easily substitute Tyrone for Dublin or Kerry.

At least yous have the success to enjoy. If Tyrone stop being successful people will stop with the Tyrone obsession some have. However no matter how bad the Dubs are there'll always be people obsessed with us!

Tyrone are a great team and certain other counties namely Kerry don't like the fact that this tyrone team have proven themselves to be the better side than the present Great kerry side. Numbers of all Irelands aside Tyrone have anhiliated kerry in the head to heads.

So expect critisism from kerry fans.

expect critisism from others because they would love your levels of success, kerry get this just as much and have been overscrutinised and punished for their misdemeanours on the pitch.

You are also getting stick because your supporters and posters are no 1 when it comes to bragging and no 1 when it comes to sensivity and rise to every crude slag that is trown your way

I would love to have your issues!

Now I note in yesterdays paper there was a photo of Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie going into a hotel.

I went into a hotel the day before as well. Why no photo of me?

That parable explains why there are so many threads about Tuyrone. They are famous and successful.

Note there are very, very, very few threads on hurling about Tyrone.

I hope this is helpful. You can now stop being paranoid as that IS an obsession.

I don't really see it as paranoia, it was just an observation about the volume and quality of posts/threads regarding Tyrone.

Some are just plain nonsense and betray the true nature of competitivness.

In fairness, you find that the Kerry boys are the least critical of Tyrone, despite the recent meetings. Now that is class!!
