Tyrone's 'Total Football'

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I find it interesting how everyone slates Tyrones style of football. We all know that their players are so interchangeable, backs can score heavy and forwards spend a lot of time defending. If a back goes forward then someone else will cover for him, everyone can play anywhere.

What is strange is that this is the same concept that Holland used in the 70s and 80s in soccer. The difference being that their brand of football was considered to be skillful and the concept of 'total football' almost has a legendary status in the game, something only the Dutch could do and required players on great discipline, decision making and togetherness.

Why is something so iconic in soccer, so hated in Gaelic football?

Tyrone play their own style of football...

It's not a favourite of the traditionalists but hey... they can go feck off in their book! and rightly so...

It was invented to win All Irelands under Kerry's nose...

If only someone could think of a new style of hurling to beat the Cats we'd be laughing.. and no one would be calling it negative.

Tyrone will stick to what they do best... even when Harte steps down and it will happen one day... the next manger in will play to the same strengths and so he should.

It's Tyrones style of ball and they've perfected it... you dont win 3 All Irelands by playing bad ball. It's up to eveyone else to adapt... because if you're good enough you can beat Tyrone... a quick ball running game beats Tyrone, Cork showed the way...

Sure you could actually handpass it into the net back in the good old days.

Booboo... Clearly your idea of 'total football' includes 'handpassing' the ball into the net? Very attractive indeed!

Booboo. It's meant to be a comparison with the Dutch Soccer team in the 70s. Interesting topic. It doesn't mean that Tyrone are better than the legendary Kerry team of the O'Dwyer era.

Thrown are stereo-typed as handpassing all the time..i dont know if you watch any of there games but they are the best foot passers in the country by a mile...all teams, not just Thrown, handpass more now because of the way the opposing team is set up with an extra man in defence

BooBoo: the Kerry style in the 70s was to handpass the ball up the field, and then invariably walk it into the net at the end. Yes, they were a great team but get real when comparing their "style" with modern football. Why was it deemed necessary at the end of the 70s/early 80s to stop the handpassed goal??
