Replace umpires with referees

Agree whole totally with you.The power to decide a goals legitimacy should rest with the umpires as they are the best placed to call it.
But like I said, the rules do not allow this. It's the same for square balls. We're standing four feet from the action, the referee could be forty yards away.
The rules should be changed.

Great idea Pinkie, I don't know what umpires are there for if they are not allowed to help the refs in something as blatent as this.

Trenchman, surely the umpire can call whether it is a goal or not - are you seriously telling me that the umpire could not have called the referee over and said Joe Sheridan carried/threw/whatever the ball over the line? Or that he did not kick the ball over the line? If umpires are not there to call goals and when goals are not scored, what are they doing?

Agreed. Having been saying that for years aswell....having just one referee at each end would solve a lot. Umpires jobs are as important as the refs in my opinion

I agree with ye there and lucky for the umpires that they did'nt get a hiding as well. They just followed along like sheep. They were a bloody disgrace.

Just to clarify a few things there Pinkie.
If Sludden had called both his umpires in and had a quick twenty second chat, then I'm sure no goal would have been awarded. The issue is that the umpire, having not flagged the goal immediately, waited to see what the referee would indicate. We all know what Sluddens decison was - the wrong one. Umpires are there to wave the flag if the ball crosses the line, but the referee has the final say on the legitimacy of a goal. The umpires cannot overrule a referee if he has already made up his mind.If needed, they can merely tell him what happened and let him decide for himself. I know that's hard to believe, but that is all the rulebook allows for. The laughable thing is during our umpire training this year,we were told to flag first, ask questions later, which is a bit of a nonsense I agree.

If I was on the post last Sunday, I would not have flagged the goal and I would have called the referee and my fellow umpire in to confirm with them exactly what happened. No goal would have been awarded, and I'm sure virtually all of the umpires at our level would have done the exact same thing.
What the team of officials did last Sunday was inexcusable really and reflects badly on all of us who are doing the job to the best of our abilities.

The two umpires in the Leinster final never put a foot wrong waved every point correctly, didn't raise the green flag until instructed to by the referee so why would anyone want referees to take their place

madness!
