Best midfielders in Ireland right now

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I know Paddy Kennan of Louth reckons he is the best out there

Thats unfair, I dont think Ive ever heard Paddy Keenan blowing his own trumpet at any stage.

Hes a very unassuming guy & is a superb talent.
I watched a county semi final 3 or 4 years ago when he gave the best individual performance Ive ever seen.
It was a third replay against his clubs bitterest rivals & he was an inspiration.
Think Keane V Juventus in that CL semi & double it. Single-handedly dragged his team through to the final.

He has been a consistant performer for years now.
Brian White on the other hand only came good since the Kildare match.
He started the NFL & the Louth SFC final last year as a corner forward .
Fair dues hes done well but I dont believe hes become Jack O Shea overnight.
I think hes been a little overhyped & this 'best midfield in the country' doesnt sit well with me.

I think he meant Paddy Keenan thinks Brendan Quigley is the best out there.

Sam , Breffni is right in what he says about Paddy Keenan and Brendan Quigley. Secondly you are being very unfair to Brian White. Brian was easily our top midfielder last year. On the back of those performances he won Louth County Player of the Year for 2,009. To say he has come good since the Kildare game is wrong. He has been good for a lot longer than that. The fact that he played corner forward for Cooley last year says more about Cooleys management team than it does about Brian. Midfield is without doubt Brian Whites best position. He has done very well since being played there.

Sorry totally misread that about Keenan!

Ah Im not running White down Greengrass, I just think he has a bit to go before hes considered top class.
Yes hes done well ,but be honest if you were told two months ago he would soon be classed on of the best midfielders in Leinster would you have believed it?

I think we should keep a lid on the hype, weve won nothing yet.

I agree about the hype Sam. It is out of hand. Being totally honest with you Sam I rated as a high class midfielder in Leinster at the end of last year. That is why I shook my head in disbelief when Cooley named at corner forward for the county final last year.

Nicholas Murphy has been up there but his very disappointing performance against Kerry in last year's final suggests that he is perhaps past his best.

Maybe having the head beat off him in the first minute had something to do with it!

John Galvin and Earley. Sean Cavanagh as well, but I'd prefer him in the forwards.

Royal14 so by your reckoning, whether Meath win the All-Ireland this year or had lost their 2 opening championship games would have no influence as to whether Stephen Bray for eg wins an All Star !!! What a load of nonsense, if you lost against Laois & then last week in the qualifiers, he would be forgotten about, I don't care how good he played but if Meath win the All-Ireland or get to the semi-final he has a much better chance of getting one.

You really don't have a clue about the GAA do you...

County man

Your right about him, but he has got to be 13 or 14 yrs old max, so pay no attention to him.
Anyone who has had an interest in Gaelic Football in the last decade is well aware of just how good John Galvin is.

countryman you don't understand where im coming from. why should a fella who has only played well in 2 games be given an all star over a fella who has played well in 5,6 or even 7 games in a championship. what im trying to point out is if you are really good enough you would win an all star no matter what my example being declan browne so if john galvin was as good as you all make out he should have won at least 1 over the 10 years you's say he was ''great''. I think its you that doesn't understand the gaa

You obviously dont understand the All Star system too well either

There are 6 forward positions, giving players like Browne a better chance over a sustained period as theres very few years where there are 6 outstanding & clear cut shouts for those positions, But theres only 2 Midfield awards given out, & genrally the winners come from a team who feature late in the year!

Just because you havent been aware of him playing well in the past, doesnt mean that he hasnt done it.

Jinxie, it's good to see that some people outside of Munster do appreciate how good a player Galvin is & you're right about Royal14, no point in arguing more with him, it's probably past his bed time now anyways bless him!
