How many people here play Gaelic Games?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Iv always been a football player but wasn't graced with ability to play beyond a decent club player. Because i can never say id be better than anyone on the county scene Im normally never critical of players. However I must say after saturdays game I was really disappointed because I seen players give up.

Only played very small bit since minor, couple of junior games. Was never gonna be a world beater!! Athletics was my thing for a good bit. Was big into sprinting till I snapped my hamstring, came back too early, snapped it again, got fed up, lazy, fond of the beer and women and piled on the pounds!! Often thought of making a comeback, but cant commit myself due to work etc

Play senior football with the club. At school I played a bit of hurling and then some underage with the club but wasn't very good and ended up in goals because I was brave/mad enough!

I also played handball in my time, a great game which doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Started when I was 7 or 8 I think...

I was fairly committed up until my mid twenties... other factors took over

Still go up for training the odd night and if their stuck and I'm around I'll go up as a sub...

I'm not as young as I use to be... the first 3 years of my thirties went very quickly....

Still play a bit. I am not that old and there is a few years left in me. I play junior B hurling and football. I played at higher levels when I was in my early twenties but stopped giving the necessary committment. I started to get into coaching in a big way (underage teams) and also dabbled in refereeing...Being honest, I could probably give up the playing part and would only miss it in the summer (I admit, at this stage I am indeed a fair weather player!)..a couple of tough games a year is enough for me...

Slayer's earlier post was excellent. Agree 100%.

Well Slayer, I gave up because I had a disagreement with a manager a few years ago, who expected me to cancel a fortnight's holidays after finishing my leaving cert for a championship match. I said I wouldnt, he told me if I didnt not to bother coming back to the club, so I didnt. Not bitter in case that is how it sounds but I wasnt prepared to put up with such rubbish. Do get on well with your man now but doubt i'll be returning to the jersey any time soon. Think about it every year but then decide not to bother with the hardship. Play squash now instead.

Gaelic sports are not for everyone... Probably too rough and tumble for most people , but there are many other sports one can play !

693969 Got to 18, hit the beer, game over!

Ditto... I was a good footballer but lacked interest and was an average hurler who loved it. Still puc around regularly but dont play competively anymore. Going to college stops most lads from playing GAA cause they dont train and are on the beer all week

Played football from mini leagues all the way up to senior with my home club in Dublin. At adult level I played for all 5 teams in our club ( Senior , Junior 'A','B','C' &'D') , also played Junior hurling a couple of times but was an absolutely woefull hurler. Also played in Australia for the Southern districts club in Perth and played for Western Australia in the 2000 Australasian championships as keeper. We were beaten by New South Wales in the final but enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Still play occassionaly here in Derry for a junior club. Haven't played too much due to bad health earlier in the year but have done well enough in goals despite being close to the 40th birthday! Great just to be involved to be honest!

Only playing football now but played both up till 2 years ago when father time forced me to choose. started playing football when i was 8 & took up the hurling at under 12.just thinking about the amount of driving the old man must have done bringing me to and from games!!! Miss the hurling but football suits the fact that i'm gone a bit slow haha!!!
