Why is there no respect for Limerick Football?

Jinxie, being a Royal you don't know what a low it is for any of the rest of us to be beaten by Meath of all teams... it's like racehorses being beaten by donkeys! Don't believe me, ask a Dub...

If we went in the back door and got someone like Dublin/Down/Mayo in the GG, we would have a real shot at them, and if we beat them....
See at this stage drawing Cork would be no craic. We play them all the time. What we would want would be a proper big team we are not used to playing, and we could beat ANYONE in Limerick.
Imagine the buzz if we beat the Dubs in the championship! And we could. If it was played in Limerick.

The lack of respect, particularly from elements of the media, is hard to take but realistically we need to win a munster title or to make a serious run in the qualifiers to begin to get the respect that is due. Personally, I think winning munster would be great, but not ultimately as important in the longterm as reaching at least a quarter-final in the All-Ireland championship. The bottom line though, is that people from outside the county probably have more regard for the likes of John Galvin, Ian Ryan, Johnny mcCarthy etc that do many so-called GAA supporters within the county.

While ye may be below the radar outside Munster both Cork and Kerry respect Limerick and know that they're a very decent side capable of beating anyone in the country if things went well for ye - I don't mean a huge amount of luck would be needed just a bit of a rub of the green on the day. Good management too. The Kenmare man is a crafty old hand.

Suspect the very poor league performance contributes to the lack of respect shown too.

It will be a problem if we win a Munster title. Then everyone will want tickets & claim to be a supporter of the footballers.

My first match watching Limerick footballers was 1991, the Munster final. It was almost alien to watch it given the fact myself, friends and family had ONLY followed the hurlers each year. We should have won the 91 Munster final, went in 2-8 to 0-10 up at half time, Kerry came out & kicked 7 points and ran out 0-23 to 3-12 winners.

The sad thing is I can remember & count all the football games I attended. I have not been a loyal supporter of the boys in Green, in total contrast to attending as many hurling games as I can. It's nothing against the footballers, just from a hurling background. Price also comes into play. In 2007 I & a group of mates went to see Limerick play Louth in Limerick (lost by a point) then the following day attended the Munster hurling final in Thurles. The cost of these days adds up, hard to make them all.

I wish Limerick footballers every success V Kerry, I hope we do it, but I can't call myself a loyal supporter. There's a small band of about 2000-3000 hardcore football fans in Limerick who deserve a lot of credit. But please, this talk of one camp knocking the other, we're Limerick fans so just support them in either code when you can.

I have great respect for this Limerick football team but they will never be respected until they win something.
When did they last beat Kerry in the championship ?

Mick, football is the 4th sport in Limerick, it's the 1st in Kerry. Football was completely ignored in Limerick until the late 90's when the county borad set up a seperate football board so it's not realistic to compare our wins aginst Kerry.

But Limerick did win the first ever All-Ireland & we are the only county to have more All-Irelands than provincial titles (2 vs 1 !!) - not even Kerry will be able to match that record :)

I find it ironic that a man with views on football like mick (look at the limerick forum to see what i mean) use the name Mick Mackey!
Shows how little you know about the great man!!!
Its like calling yourself TeddyMcCarthy and saying how rubbish football is!!

you should have listened to terrace talk on radio kerry last monday week and all were of the opinion that Limerick would give Kerry a very difficult match. I personally don't agree with you that Limerick football gets no credit and in Mikey Ned and Donie Buckley they will know Kerry inside out and could cause an upset. I definitely feel Mike Ned gets awful press from yere own press.

That's down to one local journalist really. The same journalist has praised the county board and Justin McCarthy to the hilt despite the hurling problems, yet Mickey Ned gets slaughtered.

Very decent side but would barley make top ten at the same time, would have sligo as a better under rated team

Limerick are most definitely underrated as a Football Team, I've seen them give Cork plenty of extremely hard games over the years. Don't think they will beat Kerry but I expect them to put up a decent performance.

Hurling is a faster and more Exciting game lets be honest, i like football when played right and to fair to the Limerick football setup they do play a good brand/style, but sadly its become a very negitive game.
I was brought up on a diet of Hurling my whole life, Rugby second, Soccer third and football fourth but i did go to alot of home games.
I was at all the finals bar the league this year and Munster final last year but i will be there next sunday.

Mickynora, for 1 thing Kerry will give Limerick the uttermost respect in the Munster Final. In John Galvin ye have prob one of the best Midfielders of the last decade.
It should be an entertaining game, I would be highly surprised if we don't pull through but it should be a clsoe game.
Kerry have always had it tricky against Limerick. I do think Limerick football missed out by not making a breakthrough in Munster during the period 04-06 when John Kearns was at the helm.

Also Limerick football will always have to play second fiddle to hurling. The tradition in your county is hurling and unless ye win several all irelands in close proximity this won't change.
Same for kerry we have a lack of respect for the hurlers (i count myself in that). I would throw an eye on their results but I wouldn't bat an eyelid if they won or lost.
