Kevin Nugent, one of the teenage stars of Armagh's All-Ireland winning team, is in hospital recovering from injuries sustained in a club game on Sunday.

Nugent underwent extensive surgery for injuries caused by the vicious assault during a Division One club game between Maghery and Cullaville.

The 19-year-old was knocked unconscious and suffered horrific facial damage.

Armagh's disciplinary authority, the CCC, is in the process of launching an investigation into the incident.

The attack, which occurred in the final moments of the game, caused damage which will prevent the teenager from chewing solid food for four months.

Nugent suffered a broken chin, broken jaw, split lower gum, and all his lower teeth were displaced and part of his lower jaw dislodged.

The CCC will seek to establish the facts surrounding the incident and quickly identify who was responsible.

A lifetime ban and possible police involvement seems to be the only response.

Its far too prevalent in games these days, you see people getting sway with striking time and time again and nothing done about it, if it happened on the street their would be more justice. Best of luck in recovery.

Jaysus that's bad. All the best to the young fella in his recovery and I hope whoever did this gets what is coming to them.

Out of interest, which club does Kevin Nugent play for?

This is unbelievable, the poor lad must have been subject to an absolutely savage attack. I hope he makes a full & speedy recovery and is back on the pitch very soon.

I was totally shocked to hear this. It's a disgrace. A lad as young as that and such a promising talent. He would be well entitled to turn his back on the gaa and Armagh if this matter isnt dealt with quickly and efficiently. This doesnt belong on a football pitch no matter what county you are from and the attacker doesnt belong on a pitch either.

I hope something happens to the person who done this but i'd reckon there is a good chance his club will deny everything or claim they didn't see anything, there is to much of this type of loyalty which is protecting thugs on the pitch and the same is happeing on the national stage as the moment.

Attack in Armagh game

Just read the report about young Nugent getting assaulted in a club game, hope the perpetrator is banned for life.I know all clubs like to rough up young talented players on the opposing team but this is sickening!Reminds me of a similar story where Joe Canning i think it was received a broken jaw in a game when he was only about 17.Anyone ever caught and suspended for that? The G.a.a has to make a stand and sort out these thugs!

Sounds to me that its the Police not the GAA who should be investigating this one.Best wishes to Kyle for his recovery.

Shows why the cccc must hit to on indiscipline at county level. This type of thuggery has to be eradicated. Sympathies to the young man.

You do that out on the street, you'll go to jail.
Shouldn't be any different just because it happened on a football pitch.
Too many young lads getting their jaws broken recently. I wish this young man a speedy recovery.

What happens on the pitch should stay on the pitch. It's a tough sport and injuries are part and parcel of the game. Whoever is responsible of course deserves to be hit with a 1 - 3 month ban but talk about the Police getting involved is way over the top

An awful incident. Pomeroy are you for real ? 1-3 motnh ban for leaving a young fella not able to eat solids for 4 months. So if someone did this to you ,or yours a month ban would be fair enough, with a fella maybe just missing one or two games ? They should never set foot inside a GAA ground again.

This is a serious assault and should not be left to the G.A.A. to deal with !! Police action needed !!
