Replacing sent off players in extra time

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

If the rules say that extra time constitutes a seperate game within a game and that teams should go back to 15 a side well thats it. If you don't like it bring it up at your Club and lobby for a change in the rules. However as it stands there is no contoversary whatever.

Aye I know that corkcelt... but as pointed out it dose give the team with the player sent off a chance to get more fresh players on the pitch.

i think the rule is spot on. extra time is a new game. especially in the kerry-cork game where extra time was as a result of 2 games. rule is fair- let it go

Well if the rules say its a separate game then I'm surprised the GAA haven't tried charging the fans already there for the 'new' game. Don't be surprised to see the hat being passed round next game that goes to ET......

If that's so then and it's counted as a new game why can't teams make as many changes as they like before the start of extra time.... the extra time favours the team with the sent off player as they have the oppertunity of getting more fresh players on the pitch, for that reason i don't think it's spot on.

Stupid stupid rule that needs to be scrapped!

Its a disgrace. wexford were breaking forward in the last minute of the game and brennan dragged one of the wexford players down safe in the knowledge that if it went to extra time they'd have 15 men back. wexford surely would have won if dublin only had 13 players.

"rules is rules"

If we do not like them change them. That rule is there for generations

This rule makes no sense. Dublin players lose their discipline and rather than them getting punished, it is Wexford being punished for not winning the game in normal time. The GAA love making rule changes so how about changing this one a.s.a.p.

The Extra Time Rule

As seen in the Dublin vs Wexford game, the GAA deem extra time as a new game so Dublin could bring on 2 players as a replacement for the 2 sent off players. Should this rule change or is it a fair rule?

rule should be changed, do yellow cards carry over from normal time, if its classed as a new game the scores should go back to 0-0:0-0

it's a strange rule but apparantly its been around a while although its flaws were shown up the last day to wexfords demise.i thought 2 dubs off the last day was fair enough as their tackling was lazy, high and in some cases cynical.

lets not forget, teams are given 3 extra subs which should be sufficient. also there is a good chance that the person sent off is a player they would have kept on so the team is punished enough

yes but the point we are making is that take the wexford dublin match is that dublin got the oppertunity bring on 5 fresh player which they did. If the rule was that the two they brought on were taking out of their allocated 3 substitutions then that would be fairer.

Wonce again wexford 3 new players in extra time dublin 5 new players in extra time..... I know some were played that were origionally subbed in normal time.

In that context is it fair..... I see you use the word "should" in your argue..... well it depends on the game inquestion really a rule should not give any team an advantage and went it allowes a team a chance to bring on more fresh players than an other it then gives that team an advantage weither they choose to use it or not.

fair enough. that could be an idea to take the red card subs out of the three extra's. i just hope no team gets 4 men sent off!

Sorry first message here so sorry if it offends... but...

1) The GAA's argument is that extra time is a new game
2) Not all games go to extra time ( only up to quarter final stage in provinces) Others go to replays
3) Red cards in the game do not count in extra time
4) Yellow Cards do carry through to the new game (extra time)
5) So we have a situation where Dublin and Wexford start extra time with a full complement of players (some carrying yellow cards). Fair enough.

Now my question is why didn't cards carry through from the original Cork vs Kerry game in Killarney to the one in Pairc Ui Caoimh? This too was a new game, no? How is it fair to teams Dublin/Wexford that their yellow cards carried through to a new game (extra time) and teams like Cork/Kerry do not have the same fear in their second game? Why can cards carry forward from the second game to the third game but not from the first to the second? Would Graham Canty (had he received his two yellows in the first game) be eligible to play in the second? Or is it only straight red cards that come in to play? In that case if a player was banned sent off in the first game and received a one match/one week ban would the player be eligible to play in extra time? Since it is a new game can a county now name additional players to replace the red carded/suspended players for extra time?

Only way around it is to play extra time in every championship match (if necessary). Red cards are red cards. Yellow cards carry through to extra time. No complaining about unfairness that matches do/don't have extra time. Only complaints would be from County boards who would be against resolving matches at first time of asking.
