Who are the "elite" football forwards today?

John Smyth is one of the greatest forwards ever.

Its an abomination that he hasn't been mentioned yet

673362 Bit of a sweeping statement IMHO. By what barometer do you deduce that Stephen O'Neill's days are behind him? There are few other forwards that inspire more stress in intercounty defenders.

I suppose you chat to a wide range of intercounty defenders on a regular basis?

You kinda left that one hangin' out there Ja. Do you want to challenge what I posted?

10.Michael Meehan
11.Declan O' Sullivan
12.Sean Cavanagh
13.Stephen McDonnell
14.Michael Murphy
15.Colm Cooper

I include Cooper as it seems to be very beneficial to have a diver in the full forward line, his theatrics are always good for a few scores in every game and he is the best at putting them away.

Its funny how people are swayed by the emotional and biased Brolly and Spillane rather that the facts

Last Sunday Cork scored 12 pts from play , Kerry 7.
Most Cork forwards are only starting their 2nd full championship season. Other than Pearse and O'Connor, they are 23 or younger.
Cork were top scorers in the league. Kerrigan was 2nd highest scorer even though he doesn't take frees.
Last sunday was the first time since 2006 that cork didnt score a goal in a chamionship game.

surely to be classed an "elite" forward you need to consistently stamp your authority on big matches! therefore gooch, o neill, mcdonnell, meehan would all be up there on their day! gooch may not be what he used to be but he is still capable of changing a game which makes him elite in my eyes! bernard brogan will be up there if he can regularly reproduce his performances so far, murphy is good but with limited supply cannot control a game like he is capable of! declan o sullivan and galvin are very important to the kerry team but it seems to be classed elite you must be scoring lots from play! there are plenty of other great forwards out there like clarke, johnston, freeman and coulter from ulster, kelly from sligo looks good, mattie forde on his day, kerrigan from cork is underrated i think! there are lots of players with potential but wouldn't be classed elite just yet!

Johnny Doyle... He'll win it clean he'll win it dirty but win it he will. The best forward over the last 10 years bar none.

Sean Johnston has to be in the top 5 after yesterday . Came on with 20 mins to go and scored 0-6, some unbelivable scores marking 3 men as cavan had 13 men

David Kelly of Sligo. A star in the making, great pace, sweet kick of the ball, can turn any back inside out.

surely you would have to include paul finlay, he has one of the sweetest left foots in the game and can almost score from any position on the right side of the 45m line, not many teams have a free taker who has being as consistent all year...

In my opinion, Johnny Doyle is overrated, good player when his team are ahead but when the going gets tough hes nowhere to be seen

Seanie Johnston, the probably most gifted of everyone mentioned, kicks scores of both feet easily. Just needs to be more consistent though.

10.Paul Galvin
11.Declan O Sullivan
12.Seán Cavanagh
13.Gooch Cooper
14.Star Donaghy
15.Cian Ward

You have two ball winners in Galvo & Cavanagh, you have the play maker in Dec Sullivan, the target man in Star, the left footed free taker in Gooch and the right footed free taker in Cian Ward.add to that, they all score from play, dare i say,the ultimate forward line&yeah, all 6 are 'elite' forwards.

Players who ive left out and deserve a mention,Michael Meehan,Daniel Goulding,Colm O Neill,Paul Finlay,Mattie Forde,Benny Coulter,Bernard Brogan,Leighton Glynn,Stephen Bray,David Kelly,Stephen O Neill,Michael Murphy,Stevie Mac,Martin Flanagan,Paddy Cunningham,James Kielt,etc,etc

Mick Tyson, you obviously have no clue about football...John Doyle never hides when the going gets tough.
Your own county Limerick were all over Kildare 2 years ago and John single handed pulled us out of the fire, scored a cracker of a goal and a superb sideline kick that day. Thats just one example.
