Floops

You are spot on there, people are always questioning Cork's killer instinct so I suppose this thread sums it up, no1 has mentioned one of their forwards. they really don't have any outstanding forwards when you think about it...it seems like they are close to an AI and many people's favourites this year but if you dont have an edge up front in the big games then while you seem so close to an AI, u might actually be very far away! The likes of gooch and donaghy seem to thrive on the big day no matter what their form has been like leading up to it. Best forwards around are Donaghy, Gooch, Matty Forde (if he recovers from injury, great player), declan o sullivan, paul galvin, stephen mc, michael meehan, benny coulter. lots from Kerry but thats only fair..competed in last 6 finals.

Overrated: any forward from Dublin, C Mortimer, Johnny Doyle, Bray and Ward from Meath...I would describe them as "handy" but no way near the elite!Murphy from Donegal has potential alright but about 10 brilliant performances away from the elite...you dont go into that group overnight!

You dont think Bernard Brogan is an elite forward? Or Alan?
Crazy talk.

Not many of the "so called experts on here" have mentioned Seanie Johnstone???...........He is as good a forward as whats in the Country on his day... Just back from injury..........so might take a bit of time to be right........Still i WOULD NOT swap him for ........Mc Donnell, Mulligan,Clarke,Bradley,Murphy,O Neill or any many other Ulster forward.

A few points to make here. Is it just me or does anybody else find Joe Sheridan and Cian ward terribly awkward looking and clumsy on the ball, not natural like gooch, Stevie O Neill. When you see Gooch and O Neill on the ball they just look like the ball is a part of their anatomy there is a fluidity or something. There are a lot of forwards who are effective but absolute natural class is very rare. I would have mortimer probably in about the 3rd or 4th tier of forwards at the moment. Paul Galvin is very difficult to classify. If there was a transfer market he would probably be the most expensive player on it but his value would have nothing to do with his scoring ability. After Gooch and O Neill and probably Declan O Sullivan I would have in no particular order Michael Meehan,Tommy Freeman, Stevie Mac, Paddy Bradley, Bernard Br ogan (and one that doesnt get too much of a mention) Johnny Doyle, Eoin Mulligan, Benny Coulter. Brian Sheehan is every bit as good as free taker as Ward in my opinion.

Whats that then, picking the ball up off the ground, and then falling over without being touched, thereby winning a free???? Brilliant stuff indeed. Also not mentioning the yards he took inward to widen his angle for the equalising free. The Gooch is a shadow of his former self. He is living off breaking ball 1970's style (a high ball lumped in and knocked off by a big full forward). A team is built for an elite forward, Gooch is only a passenger in that team, but a passenger who happens to be handy with a dead ball. Other than that he is not a quality player. His scoring over the last 3 years would be atrocious only for his free-taking - not the sign of an elite forward.

So your saying he hasnt been one of the best players in the last 5-6 years..clearly he has been..and really..what would you know about football?Cavan man !

If you actually read my post you would see that I never said that he was never a great player (see bold highlighted bits above). When he first started out he was, but in the last three years he has done very little. Your fellow compatriot Farney agrees with this as well. And don't go there about what does a Cavan man know about football. Monaghan have a half decent team for the first time for a generation and now every Monaghan man thinks he is an expert. Whatever.....

673362 Bit of a sweeping statement IMHO. By what barometer do you deduce that Stephen O'Neill's days are behind him? There are few other forwards that inspire more stress in intercounty defenders.

I suppose you chat to a wide range of intercounty defenders on a regular basis?

Of the forwards I have seen so far this year, Bernard Brogan has impressed me the most. A small mention to Ian Ryan from Limerick, who is still quite young. Some of the biase on this thread is very funny, especially from the Meath lads

So, Murphy has to produce 10 brilliant displays, but benny is included after 1.
O'Rourke and Sheridan are far better than Cian ward.

O'Neill, McDonnell, Freeman, Murphy, Clarke and Coulter are the only elite forwards in Ulster IMO. I think the first three named are the top three and there's a little break to the next four. McManus is also a fine forward.

Benny Coulter has been doing it for years for Down and Ireland. Why are people saying he's had one good performance?

Benny has produce a lot more than 1 "one man show" for Down...he has got a huge percentage of their scores over the years...the same goes for Paddy Bradley, not as good these days but again..he has carried Derry through a lot of games with great individual performances, Murphy needs to do this and as I said he has potential so he probably will...just don't mix up the potentials with the guys who are well established.

Mikeynora

Alan Brogan is on the bench for Dublin sunday so at this point in time, how could he be among the elite, he's obviously gone back a bit and Bernard has passed him out without doubt...I always thought Alan was better but not now. Alan gets a big score 1-5 or whatever when the Dubs pulverise Westmesth, Laois etc but he's not there on the big day when really needed. if I put it to you this way, Dublin would beat Wmeath 20 pts, Kerry might only win by 4 or 5 but Kerry would beat Dublin..so basically Brogan and the likes put in their big scoring performances against the weaker teams whereas Donaghy and Gooch tend to work the opposite and produce it when scores are a lot harder to come by. it would be harder get 0-3 against Tyrone than 1-6 against a weak team.
Bernard Brogan, really stamped his authority in 2/3 games last year but thats only one year....on average, the "elite" group have at least 3 years of great football played...consistently producing the goods.

673906 when was the last time cooper kicked 5 from play and swung a game against a big team lads?

Last August against Dublin; he scored 1-7 (1-3 from play). Goal happened in 36 seconds! Reckon that swung the game....and before you say Dublin are not a big team-they are-they were last years Leinster champions and are a Div 1 team

Best forwards-Galvin, Gooch, Donaghy and Declan O Sullivan. Stephen O Neill and Cavanagh, Michael Murphy, Michael Meehan. I like Brogan too.

New up and coming forward will be Barry John Keane

if gooch can not score from play when playing with a top team like kerry then how can he still be regarded as the best. Leighton Glynn is your man. also Paddy Cunningham The Brogans, Seanie Johnstone, Freeman, Coulter, Sean Cavanagh. and above all Michael Meehan.
