taping the wrists does give extra support for fielding a ball, the sleeves can be big and get in the way thats why they are taped up. the rolled shorts, the band on them can be annoying. the bicycle shorts under the shorts can help prevent groin injury. and the white socks over the fball socks well i dont know about that, its stupid.

nowaday youngsters hardly want to look bad .. they got it from somewere eg, senior players, county seniors.
When ones say back in our day we didnt do this and that .. football has improved and is also on tv and who would want to watch 30 men on a field wearing the exact same thing and all looking rough! Its opinion and dont let anyone tell you different

The colour of a lads boots doesn't matter as long as he can play ball! People who judge a lad just because he wears white or yellow boots are just cynical and old fashioned. The fact is that the new models of boot from adidas, nike, etc. rarely come in black anymore, thats just the way its gone. Lads naturally want to wear the best and newest pair the can get.

Interesting discussion lads. Personally I think all these things are good for the game. It gets the women excited and more involved. Boosts your ego too. What is everyones position on camogie and Ladies Football? Personally I think the Camogie skirts are a bit too short. It is setting a bad example.

This thread is ridiculous. If a player wants to wear undershorts, thermo vests, tape his sleeves so be it. The game has changed, and the younger guard are always going to become influenced by what the senior players are doing. If Colm Cooper/Bernard Brogan are doing it, well then inevitably young lads from Kerry or Dublin who want to be just like their idols are going to do likewise. There is nothing I hate more personally than a yellow player/poser who does not want to get involved. But some of the toughest players I know on the pitch do some of the above. I have no problem with that.
That said, I do feel some go way over the top. I recall Conor Mortimer a few years ago in the Connacht final with white undershorts, white thermo, white socks, white tape on one of his knees, white tapes on his sleeves and on both his wrists. It was a bit too much and looked mad.
But the point is, maybe some players feel it gives them confidence. Others obviously do it for show. Personally, I dont really like wearing undershorts and thermos and all that craic and would never wear any boots besides black Adidas World Cups.At the moment, we have the modern tight fit style jersey which is brilliant, and they do make you feel more confident on the pitch. If we had to revert back to our ols baggy and loose jerseys, I would definetely tape the sleeves as its more comfortable.

You went on about how you didnt mind lads wearing all the accessories and white boot etc. Then you just went and took a cheap shot at Conor Mortimer for doing everything you had just agreed with simply because he's from Mayo, no need buck, that was childish.

I think it helps with confidence and also adds a bit of style to the game, i mean if someone from another country came over here and watched a bitta GAA i personally wouldnt like them to see 15 bog men wearin their older brothers hand me down boots and a pair of odd socks

In fairness Connor Mortimer took thinks to a whole different level with the RIP Michael Jackson stunt. It has to be said that the Mayo lads are the biggest offenders when it comes to this sort of carry on. If they focused as much on the game as they do themselves in the mirror beforehand they might actually win something! (And the standard of posing in Mayo footballing is droping lately, look at Aiden O Sheas Mullet and Hennellys bleached hair- could he not have put a bit of conditioner through it before the match to take the dry look of it!!)

I wear pink boots,I wear all the gear when it's cold, snood&all, sure it means I get hit that much harder in games, but it doesn't bother me,can't see why it should bother anyone.it's ridiculous to think a lads "manliness" can be determined by the colour of his boots.as long as you get the job done on the pitch, who cares what anyone wears!~PHS

in my day you togged out on the side of the road and were lucky to have 2 socks the same colour or any jockstrap at all. we used to have to walk 20 miles to training and 10 back. go to bed without any breakfast and get up at the crack of dawn and milk a field of cows with one hand. we couldn't afford shoes so our mother used to paint laces on our feet. we slept on straw infested by rats under galvanised roofing and got beaten black and blue by the teachers at school and then got beaten again when we went home for gettin beatin at school. still it never did us any harm.

it's important to look your best when you are out on the pitch. you never know who might be watching.

I wear white boots and if its cold i'll sometimes wear an UA or Canterbury long sleeve thermo underneath my jersey. Dont wear the bicycle shorts but i can see the advantages. Like has been said above, if it makes a player more confident in himself then all the better, Hurling and Football depend so much on confidence and not hiding on the field

Personally I think its all for show, but I do wear the bycicle shorts, they do help support.

Funny story, I was playing college ball with a County player, who was a bit of a poser, she had been a regular on the county team, got "lovely" fluorescent yellow boots specially ordered with her county number stitched on them. what a laugh we had.

Funny thing was in the next short while, maybe a matter of weeks, the person was dropped to the bench and wearing number 31 with 8 stitche donto a boot!!!!

haha
